do I have a bad screen on my 1710?

I just got my 1710 today, but I don't like the screen one bit. I can't find a good viewing angle for starters. I have to keep my head almost perfectly situated for it to look decent. If I move to the right, left, up or down just a few inches, parts of the screen become dark or washed out.

But even if I keep my head centered in front of the screen, it still doesn't look good. The default settings were way too bright. I adjusted the brightness and contrast for about an hour but I can't get it to look decent. I had an Inspiron 9100 and this screen is terrible compared to the i9100.

I also don't care for the glossy smoothness either. It reflects like a mirror and can be distracting if something bright is behind you. This glossy stuff isn't a big deal, but still kinda disappointing considering the poor image quailty too.

Is this just a bad screen I have? Or are these new screens like this?

Also, I checked my detailed config on-line, and it seems I have a Samsung LCD.

The glossy is a great feature, imo. I previously had an i9100 as well, but I'm currently using an XPSM170. The screen is darker, yes, but it just takes time to get used to.

I hate to do it but I'm gonna have to return this laptop unless they can replace the LCD with a better one. There is no way this is worth what I paid. (The rest of the system is fantastic BTW. Aside from the screen this is everything I wanted.)

This is like the 6th or 7th dell system I've purchased over the years and I've never had to return one. Anyone know the details about returning a system? Don't I have a month or something like that? I really would like a good laptop but unless they can give me a good screen it's of no use to me. I'm going to call them first thing monday but if anyone has any advice, I'm all ears.

First thing is contact them tell them you arent satified with the screen. Usualy they send a guy to change the LCD. I dont know if it depends on the warrantly you have tho.

I hated to do this but I returned the m1710 today. It's such a sweet system but the glossy screen really bugged me. The rep I spoke with was understanding and didn't make a problem out of it. I'm glad too because this is my 6th or 7th Dell and I've never had to return one before today.

I found out the M90 doesn't have the same type of glossy screen, so I just ordered one of those.

BTW I noticed something while ordering the M90. It cost about $200-300 more for the same specs. But it comes with a 'free' 19" external LCD. There's no way to disable this option! Well, actually you can select "no external monitor" but I didnt see much point in passing up a 'free' monitor. I wish they would have simply lowered the price but I guess thats Dell for you.
