Is there anything I need to do with my brand new Inspiron 6400's 9 cell battery before i begin using it it regularly?

I have used for the past 3 hours plugged in, one of my friends suggests letting it drain more or less completely and then recharging it. Is this necessary? Any good practises i should keep in mind to make this battery last? This is my first laptop and i wanna make it last as long as possible!
