14" display resolution for gaming. high or low?

I'm looking in to buying a laptop with a 14" display. I have two conflicting requirements. For work, I'd like as high a resolution as possible. I use visual studio a lot and the real-estate is important for my productivity. For gaming however, I'm concerned that the mediocre graphics (geforce go 7700 at best) provided in 14" notebooks will be stressed by the higher resolutions.

I haven't used an LCD for games in a really long time. How well do they handle scaling these days? Can you decrease the resolution but maintain the same aspect ratio and still get a good display of the games?

I have a 14 widescreen with a x1600..
max res 1280x768.. not high :P

and the screen is way too small for gaming. I recommend you get a 15 incher at least

I think you'll be miserable with Visual studio on a 14" screen.

even with a 1440x900 screen? of course if i moved up to a 15.4" screen i'd have 1920x1200 available to me...

Most of the time when I'm working the notebook will be hooked up to a bigger monitor (I plan on purchasing a big LCD for home). The amount of time that i'll actually have to spend coding on the small laptop screen is going to be pretty small, although the option is nice. So portability is more important since i'll have to carry this thing every day, everywhere I go.

I'm getting the laptop because when i'm away from work, i need to be able to access the remote management capabilities of my office's servers in case anything goes wrong because on top of writing the database apps, i just recently inherited responsability for the network, but i'm not there all the time.
