Problem: i have no idea whats wrong!!

ok so kmy laptop, 7660, had issues with random bsods. i call tech support over the summer and they say its the harddrive. they send me a new hdd and out of the box that one is bad too. they send me a new one, i install it and put windows on it all while on the phone with tech support and had no issues.

my bsods have come back. i also encountera problem on startup where my cpu will go to 100% due to shstat.exe and sometimes shstate.exe and svchost.exe going up to 50% cpu usage each. if i dont immediately bring up the task manager and end both processes the computer restarts. it will often restart with a bsod and continue to do so up to 25-30 times if i let it. over the summer tech support told me shstat.exe is a virus. this i know to be bullshit.

with my bsods there are many different errors. i will sometimes get a 0000007F. mostly the two bsods i get are 00000008E with ntfs.sys error and the other is 000000008E win32k.sys.

i also have encountered the problem in the last few days of not being able to get sound on my laptop.

idk whats going on. originally over the summer when presented with the bsod errors i assumed it was a memory issue. i tested both sticks and came up with nothing. the hdd is new, unless it went bad again idk what else could be causing it. is it possible that the copy of windows that was initally put on my laptop since the first day i got it was bad?

any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

btw, im a college student and have very little free time which is why im not on the phone with tech support bitching them out. im hoping that over winter break i can just send the damn thing in to depot.

I would begger that your Windows Install is bad.

I would reinstall windows and see if that solves it. I reinstall windows every six months on my main rig.

If that's not it, search for the error codes on google.com and you might find something.

The worrisome failures with the 766 involve the mobo or video module as they are no longer made and nobody has any in stock anymore, so I hope it's not one of those parts failing. Usually with those failures though, you don't get any picture on the screen, just fans and lights and then nothing...

yea my video card failed 2 months after i got it and they replaced it no problem. snce this system is over 2 years old i realy hope this isnt an issue that they cant fix. thank god i got the 3 year warranty.

if i reinstall windows would you suggest the alien respawn disk or the actual windows disk included with the system?

any other suggestions appreciated.

what about the lack of sound on videos and music?

If you have a respawn, I'd use that then update windows and drivers.

The sound issues could be a lot of things from viruses to software to corrupt drivers or windows issues.

If you reload windows and it doesn't fix it, you know it's a hardware problem.

Make sure you back up everything you want to save before doing the install as everything will be wiped off the drive.

btw 40oz i dont think their depot fixes 766's anymore

If he's under warranty they'll fix it. If they don't have the parts anymore and can't find them they'll force upgrade him to a newer model.

Don't get your hopes up much, they keep stock on some parts for older systems that are still under warranty.

sounds good. ill have to do the reinstall soon.

i was gonna say, they better fix it. my dad is a damn good attorney. If they dont have the parts that wouldnt be the end of the world. I would love for it to get lost by fedex so i can get $3300 for something new haha.

After a search for what shstat.exe was, I came up with this:

" shstat.exe is an application which deals with McAfee process-to-process communications. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated."

Do you have McAfee installed? If so, your installation may be causing the problem.

got the sound to work.

Get rid of McAfee. It's a pain in the ass and is a resource hog. I suggest using something like AVG (it's free and works pretty damn well).

ok so i got rid of mcaffe, alot less blue screens and the sound is back in windows media after i uninstalled and reinstalled that. i only seem to get blue screens when im running alot of stuff on my computer (ie torrent downloads with 5-6 aim windows and 3-4 internet windows). i should never get blue screens. any ideas would be helpful. thanks!

If you do that many things at the same time, you're going to have issues no matter what computer.

I had MacAfee a few years ago on one machine, uninstalling it didn't work. It left crap all over my machine and fudged up the registry, so I had to reformat and reinstall to get my system back. You might want to do the same.

sounds like a plan. im thinking about just doing the respawn over thanksgiving when i have more free time and if the problems continue i will insist that the system is sent to depot.
