Mandrake 10 install on 5680 (instructions) - Page 2

Anyone have any problems getting sound to work? I installed mandrake10 with no problems except for sound. I read on the forums that you need alsa to get sound to work, but that wasn't for mandrake. Is that what I need? I tried installing it but i get an error that says it can't find the kernel.

Alsa is built into the 2.6 kernel that comes with mandrake - you should not need to install it - what you may find however is that the sound defaults to zero volume - try using alsamixer to make sure that the volume settings are correct (This is a common problem) Also if you want the kernel (or rather the source) you will need to install the pkg for the kernel source.

Ok so you install the fglrx rpm. And does it compile correctly? usually I have to force the rpm to install because it conflicts with X libs. After the install it is sometimes necessary to manually build the drivers.

cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod (I could be wrong about the _mod part)
sh make.sh
cd ..
sh make_install.sh

This will install the fglrx.ko module into your modules dir for your current kernel. Now Keep in mind - all of this will work ONLY if you have the kernel source installed. If you dont have the source installed then the module cannot be built, even if you werent building the module you should have the source .

Ok after the module is installed run fglrxconfig and setup the machine - tell it NOT to use the external agpgart. Then everything should be golden.

Well first make sure you have it installed

rpm -qav | grep alsa

That will give you a listing of packages with alsa in the name.

Then if you have it simple type alsamixer at the command line.

nope its not listed. how do I install it? should it have been installed when i installed mandrake?

Arghhh - ok must not resort to RTFM. Ok basically what you want to do is use a tool called urpmi - there are also several graphical interfaces to this - namely gurpmi , rpmdrake - I like rpmdrake - they are all accessible from the mcc control center (Ie the Mandrake Control Center) - simply run rpmdrake and search for alsamixer - then install it - it will ask for a cd and roberts your fathers brother.

urpmi is the command line version of this -the great thing about urmpi is that it can be configured to get updates and contrib and plf rpms - for that info you are going to have to google for configuring urpmi as it really is something you need to RTFM for. I do also suggest reading at least the man page for rpm.

bratag: i had done all that stuff, and everything compiled correctly. do i have to enable 3d accel somewhere, seems like its not switched on

Mandrake sucks... if you want cutting edge linux without all the pre-compiled packages try gentoo or slackware.
Or wait a month for Fedora Core 2...

pr0nX, I agree with you but please dont start a distro fight; this is a Mandrake thread
post #34 of 61
I didnt mean to stir things up. i used to use mandrake but the more i used it, the more little things started to annoy me. using slackware then gentoo has really helped me learn a lot about linux and how everything works. gentoo has some great installation docs and none of the annoying programs i will never use that come with the distro. what sets gentoo apart is its portage system. if you want to install a program you just type "emerge" then the name of the program. no more depedencies. it automaticly downloads the latest version of what you want to install and installs it with just one command.

You are absolutely right

Yes and thats just just for people want to wait for **** to compile - I dont have that kind of time anymore. I am a UNIX sysadmin so Ive dont all the step by step - recompile everything crap a hundred/thousand times - I want a system that installs and works - and mandrake does that for me. It also allows me to tweak it and have it still run. Ok enough responding to noob posters.

JP - can you perhaps give me the result of glxinfo or even fglxinfo - also does the fglrx modules get loaded and if so what does it say in the dmesg output.

PS: I was using Linux with pre 1.0 kernels so don't preach to me about slackware etc, back then slackware was all we had. Oh and yeah urpmi does exactly the same thing as emerge - so obviously you didnt spend enough time with Mandrake to figure it out correctly

Relax, Bratag. Everyone who has been around here long enough knows exactly what your stand on the issue is... Lets get back on topic...
