Tezz,

You need to use the desktop 9600 linux drivers.
ok m8 got the drivers...
but i have hit a snag..i have 2 HDs on raid 0 paritioned into 4 partions
i left one empty for linux but when i came to install linux it did not know any of
my partions ???

they are all NTFS is this a problem ?

also all my other partions are full of stuff and i dont realy want to go back to
just IDE ultra...

is there a way around this ???

thanks for ya help..
tezz, NTFS is a MS file system and thus Linux support for it is poor. You can read it just fine (with special drivers ofcourse) but write support is shotty. In any way, you have to clear that partition of NTFS (make it just empty space) or format it with FAT32 if all else fails (FAT32 is a good "no man's land" between Windows and Linux as both systems have read and write support for it).

ok m8 formated the partion in FAT32 and it sees it YES...

Now it asks me to mount it with a /
i have tried evry combinatin and no luck aaahhhh doing my head in..
but i ant giving up )
I didnt quite catch that thing about mounting. You should just be able to see the partition via fdisk, delete it and set up the root, the boot and the swap partitions for Linux, as required.

well i have tried again with no luck...it cant see my raid 0 setup even though i have
formated a partion in FAT32...But i did find this ...

http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/ATA-RAID-HOWTO/

i dont know any one with a pc with linux on so i am screwed

i think if people want linux to catch on before Microsoft bring out there version they better find an easyer way to install it...

i am going to re-try but i not giving up my raid just yet..
it took me 3 days to install all my adobe suff and plugins and getting it to work
with prem pro...

do you guys have raid setup ??
did you put it on its own partion ??
or did you install it in windows partion ?? if so is this a safe way cause on the
mandrake forum there are peeps who have lost everthing on there HD be cause of a known bug ...

I'm considering an installation of Mandrake 10 community on my 5680, or perhaps a Debian installation. The defining factor to me is if I can get my Atheros chipset mini-PCI card to work. So far I've been unable to find any drivers for this particular card. Anyone able to enlighten me?
Correct me if I am wrong but I think NDISWrapper has support for that. Its the piece of software that makes windows wireless drivers work under Linux.

NDISwrapper support is built into mandrake 10.0 BTW

Great! Good to hear! Okay just one more question- I'm working off of the 60gb 7200 RPM HDD. How much should I partition for Linux? I'll keep all my big media files on my winxp pro partititon (which currently takes up the whole drive, but I have partition magic to fix that), but I'd like to be able to install quite a few linux applications, GUIs and themes etc, and maybe a game or two...maybe. Would 10gb be sufficient? 15? How big should the swap be, as a seperate partition? Also, will either linux or windows mess up the boot sequence/bootloader for the other one? Also, there is a Vsync and Hsync option. If our refresh rate on 5680 screens are at 60hz, should I set them both to 60? What about on a DVI monitor? Finally- What's the deal with a "framebuffer" for laptops? I've never configured it in knoppix. Is it something that only older laptops need to worry about it?

Ok, so thats a little more than one question, but your help is really appreciated!

I didnt see anything immediately obvious jpjp. I will do a compare against mine tonight and see what if anything is missing. At this stage does 3d accell work for you and if so can you give the fps figures from glxgears and fgl_glxgears so That I can figure out if you are optimal.

10GB should be fine ChivalricRonin - keep in mind though that games like ut2004 etc chew up just as much space in linux as they do in windows. The actual OS itself with KDE and Gnome etc as well as a quite a few extras should take no more than 2gb. If you want you can most likely cut out almost everything and get it down to a lot less, but it sounds like you want to have options.

heres the results.
fgl_glxgears
Loading required GL library /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
Error: couldn't get fbconfig

then i try glxgears

Loading required GL library /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
665 frames in 5.0 seconds = 133.000 FPS
79 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15.800 FPS
81 frames in 12.0 seconds = 6.750 FPS
80 frames in 13.0 seconds = 6.154 FPS
the last few runs i maximized the window, framerate plummets

whats fbconfig?
Okay, well as of this moment I'm typing this on Mandrake 10! However, things arn't exactly working out as well as I'd like....

1. I cannot run the updater, as keeps giving me an error about

unable to add medium, errors reported
retrieval of source hdlist or synthesis failed
no hdlist found for medium "update_source"
problem reading synthesis file for medium "update_source"

It then tells me there are no updates available.

2. Just incase I'ld like to try something different, how do you UNINSTALL linux? I mean, I can boot back into windows and delete the partition, but what about LiLO? Is there something else to be done?

Ok this is a pretty common issue with urpmi and can be easily solved by reading the man page on it and then heading over to.

http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php

JPJP I can tell from that that you are not running 3d enabled. When you installed the ATI driver rpm - did you use the -force option? If you dont do that then you will not get the GL libs you need. Also dont forget to run fglrxconfig after the install. Also remember every time you put a new kernel in (ie compile) you will need to recompile the ATI drivers which sit /lib/modules/fglrx.

ati drivers, mandrake 10, 5680 help!!!

I'm trying to get 3d support on my 5680 but I'm having no luck
I get an error when installing from the RPM
so I'm trying to manually rebuild and reinstall the kernel module.
I installed the kernel source via "urpmi kernel-source" and everything went along normally.
when I try to sh make.sh I get:

HTML Code:
ATI module generator V 2.0
==========================
initializing...
Error:
kernel includes at /usr/src/linux/include do not match current kernel.
they are versioned as ""
instead of "2.6.3-7mdksmp".
you might need to adjust your symlinks:
- /usr/include
- /usr/src/linux
any help would be appreciated greatly!!!

Lite, what was wrong with the 5680 Mandrake 10 thread? Im merging...
didn't know if that thread was still alive or not. sorry about that mmarkin
anyhoo apparently urpmi gave me the wrong kernel source. I installed the source off of the mandrake CD and it worked like a charm.
I'm off to install UT2003
