Will this hardware meet the requirments for this game?

Hi Guys,

I'm just wondering if this hardware will be capable of running this game without significant problems.

The game is a 3d RTS 'Company of Heroes'...
http://pc.gamezone.com/gamesell/p26651.htm

Its listed minimum requirements are:

1.5GHz CPU (I assume that means P4) 512MB RAM GF3 or Radeon 8500 64MB

The hardware specs are:

1.4 Celeron-M, 768 RAM, Radeon 200m 128meg shared ram.

Also, is there anything I can do, paricualrly in regard to tweaking the CPU or the graphics card that will improve performance? Forcing the shared memory to stay at 128? Perhaps disabling vsync? Anything else?

Thanks in advance

it will fail miserably at running that game.. CoH is one of the most graphically demanding games out now.

There's no reason to think it would fail miserably. The minimum requirements are pretty much borderline with the specs for the hardware. CPU should be fine, I just need to know about the graphics card really. The graphics are demanding, but there are many options to turn off shadows and various effects, without harming gameplay. The minimum requirements are actually no where near as demanding as other games out now, or even many out over the last year or so.

If possible, could someone give me an informed opinion?

You are very wrong, as in it will play fine on low-med settings. Also, a game that requires an ati8500/gf3 is not "one of the most demanding" games out now. Heck, even HL2/CSS has the same requirements and we know that they are nowhere near the powerhogs that a FEAR or BF2 or Oblivion are.

You guys prolly aint even gamers. If you were, you would know that the min reqirements on the box are the min requirements to RUN the game. This does not make the game playable to any degree. have a x1600 and it runs horribly on my system at semi-high settings. (under 40fps.. min acceptable fps is 55)

and dont even bother playing it if your cant run it on high. The game's biggest selling point is the graphics.

I think it's quite clear from our comments that we're aware of that. People can still enjoy games without having the graphics set on max. Hell I played loads of fun games on the Amiga 500 and the graphics compared to today were attrocious Frankly, it's opinion whether the game's selling point is its graphics - I don't think so at all. I play Dawn of War with graphics set on minimum (to reduce ocassionaly lag) and I barely notice the difference at all. If however, there's likely to be a lot of stutter that actually effects gameplay/causes major lag when playing agsint other people that's not so cool. But anyway - I don't want to get off topic re: whether graphics quality is that important, because really it's just opinion. I'm sure even on low setting the graphics will still look decent and TBH I don't care as long as the game itself is playable. Thanks Adinu, BTW. Any more opinions much appreciated.

LOL.
Okay, I dont think we are even on the same standard levels when it comes to gaming.
Maybe Im a uber geek, but if you want your gamesto look like play-doh wars and run at 20 fps, go ahead.

Sure, you could "play" it. But minimum specs are the specs required to run it period. That means no graphic options and slow performance; basically, minimum specs do not come close to the more demanding enjoyable specs. I mean, do you really think you would enjoy playing at 640x480, now graphics options, and still get bad performance? Becuase that is what you are facing that that hardware...

Are you sure that is the case or are you just assuming, 'cause it's not really that helpful otherwise. Yeah, they are the minimum specs, but it's safe to assume they are the minimum specs for the game to be 'playable' - i.e. not major performance problems/lags etc... I have played games before on comupter with lower than the minimum specs in some areas - i.e. CPU and often they work fine. Like I said, I don't really care about the graphics; the computer in question is a budget buy, by someone that doesn't have alot of cash to throw about... if anyone want to be snobby about it then that's cool... w/e... But anyway, graphics no big deal... I do care about the performance/issues with lag, though. But anyway: if someone who is familiar with the situation or a similar one (i.e. have used the 200m on similar games with similar sorts of requirements) could help me out that would be great. *** EDIT: after a bit of research I have found that Battle for Middle Earth 2 has about the same requirements. Has anyone out there used BFME2 with a 200m card? *** EDIT 2: afte some more research I found this: http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread....=55029&start=0 (see last couple of posts) which seems to say that the 200m works quite well with BFME2 so things are looking up!

I will agree with that.
It wont be an ejoyable experience. This game is demanding...especialy when it get's crowded. Also a guy from work tried it on his computer..and the maps were dark...he couldnt see anything....but I dont know what video card he has.

I tried it on a p4 3.0 Ghz with a radeon x300 and it was difficult to play, nearly impossible at some points.
It's working alot better on my Athlon 1.8+ with a radeon 9800 pro.

Just download the demo...you'll get your answer. Just be patient...it's about 2 gigs.

Hey awesome, thanks znk0r. Can't download the demo unfortunately... the computer is being purchased by a friend of mine (second hand). Couple of questions though: the x300, I take it was the desktop x300 not the mobility x300?? I hear the desktop x300 is comparable to the 200m, so it's very interesting results. How much RAM were you using? And with your P4, what type was it (if you know) i.e. how big was the L2 cache?

Was that on lowest possible settings/resolution?

yes it was a desktop with 1.5 gigs of ram. I dont konw the type of cpu and I dont remember the settings I let it autodetect but they were quite low. I'll try and have a look tomorrow if I have the time.
The game got kinda choppy and using the mouse to select units was getting difficult. I'll have to check if there are things I could still turn off.

There's a thread about people finding it choppy at max settings, max res on their xps 1710
