I finally could not resist and ordered a fully loaded XPS M2010 and received it last week. It is simply amazing and makes my 17" notebook look like a subnotebook. I have not had much time with it, but the main thing that struck me beyond its incredible size is the awesome build quality of the machine. The entire machine is wrapped in a faux-leather like material. The display is easily the selling point and is leaps and bounds better than any other display in a notebook; of course, it cheats with a desktop display.

One other thing that is nice, by looking at the service manual, is that every component, including the CPU and video card, is easily accessible which means pretty easy upgrades when and if Dell offers them.

The CPU is more than quick Also, although it is not the highest performance GPU, it is still ATI's best and fits in the high-end category and is faster than most other mobile cards. It performs similar to the GeForce Go 7800GTX, and it will get a boost with the Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The notebook I am replacing had a GeForce Go 7900GTX (HyperSonic Aviator EX7 - Clevo D900T) so at least in my world now, everything does not revolve solely around gaming. I never thought I would say that

You will see shortly. Hope you enjoy the waiting.

I really don't you can call that a laptop. I mean, would you actually use on your lap? I don't think so. I think it's pretty safe to call that a desktop IMHO. Heck, I can put a carrying handle on my brother's XPS 400 and call that a laptop too then.

Verified through Dell 2 weeks ago.... The 2010 is up for some pretty sick upgrades. They said the system is still in it's infancy and they are testing the market right now which they said was surprisingly good for this model.

So keep your eyes peeled...

Oh and I would damn near bet that if you changed the heatsink from the ATI card to the nVIDIA card (if it were to magically line up...) it would work in the 2010 and no one is saying anything. Too bad I dont have one to test my theory.

IMO that can't be called a notebook...no way....its a desktop thats folds and has a handle...AU$6000 no way worth that much money either...

It DESERVES to have next gen card IMO.

Ah, that's very interesting. Any specifics? That might fit perfectly into my upgrade cycle...

[Sigh...] I thought we had covered that territory before. Nobody with half a clue would call it a laptop. It's not a laptop. So what?

That's closer, but still no cigar. It would leave out the main distinguishing feature of this machine: portability.

[Shrug...] Sure, if you also stick the keyboard and monitor to the box, with some duct tape perhaps, then you could call that a mobile desktop, too. Not very elegant, and probably a lot more heavy and bulky than the 2010, but, hey, people do the strangest things. Good luck selling your "new model" in the marketplace. ... As a piece of advice: You might get yourself in trouble, though, if you try to sell that contraption as a "laptop".

On a more general note, I continue to be fascinated by the strong visceral reactions some people show towards this machine. I mean, if you are not interested in some computer model offered by Dell, for whatever reason, that is perfectly fine. Simply don't buy one of these. After all, nobody forces you to even look at one of these, let alone buy one. But other than that, why would you care one way or another? Why all the emotion?

I have to agree to a point here... really guys. There is absolutely no reason to rag on about this machine. Its a work of art really, but definately out of many people's price point. When you guys are openly ragging on it in a post where someone is excitedly awaiting his new machine, its rather insulting to that persons personal tastes. We have all went round and round about who likes it and who doesn't... I dont see any reason to keep knocking people down when they jump in and go for it.

However, I must say congrats on the new purchase! Even though its not my cuppatea, I think it will serve you well for now and the forseeable future. Heck, if I thought I had room in my truck (and the budget!) I would probably have that baby between my seats while truckin on down the road! The 20.1" screen would be more like my CRT at the house (21" Viewsonic) That would surely make GPS guidance much easier to see!

Anyway, let us know how you like it when it arrives!

Yup, grats to those who bought the machine. It has appeal to me and I can see why people want/like it. I would love one for my wife/living room. It just isn't for everyone.

I hope there are lots of upgrades for it and like that general direction (increased upgradability) on things.

I believe that m2010 is more for those who travel 2-3 times a month only and need it with you. Definetely not for the daily user.

It's style and capabilities is definetely amazing and I wouldn't mind having one at home. But that thing would sit there unless my house is being flooded and I needed to preserve my digital properly.

I do.

However, not being a gamer, I can't help you on the desire to modify it!

You'l like it, I am sure.

This is my first visit to these forums, but in the short amount of reading I've done so far, the only thing I can come up with is some form of jealousy. Because, exactly as you ask, why all the emotion?

There also seems to be a lack of understanding about the wide range of uses people put their machines to - computers are not just a toy, or a work tool - they are many things to many people.
