M505XL order received: no problems

Just some quick info: I ordered an M505XL approximately 10 days ago and received it this morning. There was no backorder problems like I have seen suggested (of course, maybe they just got all the parts and I happened to order at the right time).

I'll let you know how it goes as soon as I get some time on the machine!!

Did you get the correct 60GB 5400RPM hard drive? Man I ordered mine on Feb. 17, 2004 and will get it March 9, 2004 (tomorrow)! Can't wait!!!

I ended up working late last night and haven't even cracked the box ... I'll let you know when I open it up.

However, whichever drive is in the system is getting replaced by a 7200 rpm drive that I bought. I'll be getting rid of the stock hard drive.

post a message when you get the new drive installed and tell us what the speed, battery and noise difference is.. also which 7200 RPM drive u bought

one problem so far

will do. finally got the unit out tonight and tried it out.

first thoughts:
- great screen
- great build quality
- awesome input device (touchpad)
- connected to internet w/ wireless no problems within minutes of power-on (the time it took to enter encryption key)
- keyboard has nice feel

PROBLEM:
- tried a DVD and the sound is very choppy and unacceptable. anyone else have any experience with this?

I just got my M505XL today!!! Wow, I love it so much, it is great. I played Finding Nemo and the sounds were awesome! There is nothing bad to say about my M505XL except a blue little, tiny, small blue dot near the left corner. But can't really see it cause my wallpaper is also blue. Is that a dead pixel? If not, will go away soon?

Do you guys know how to share 56k Internet Connection? I have a Microsoft Router MN-500.

Bad: I got a Fujitsu MHT2060AT 4200RPM

I do not want to bother with removing the hard drive and having to reintall the windows. It is a brand new system and don't want to kill it in anyway

I will try to get my Esale Advisor to credit me for the inconvient instead of replacing my hard drive, maybe I should ask him for $100 credit? What do u guys think? or $100 ++++?

I guess no one got the 5400RPM without having to call in for replacement right?

Again, please help me how to share 56k internet connection ok thanx

Flyer, sorry to hear that your sounds seem to be choppy. My M505XL sound amazing just like my 2.1 Surround Sound desktop speakers. Can't really tell the difference between my 2.1 sourround sound desktop speakers and the M505XL surround sound. I LOVE IT!!!!!

littleman, IMO the topic of the HD has been made into a mountain from a mole hill. I did in fact fight the battle over the 5600 speed drive. The difference is not substantial. The price difference between the two is very small (less than 100 dollars). The reason I fought for it was for principle. So, yes get those Gateway people for all you can get, but don't worry about the decision to stick with the 4200 drive. It is a great drive and you will not regret it. Have fun with the new system!

I also fought the fight to for the 5400 hd. I reported in a previous post that my Gateway sales rep had a new XL shipped to me after a couple weeks of trying to get someone in sales and tech support to address my HD issue. Unfortunately, the new notebook shipped also shipped w/ the Fujitsu. I shipped the new notebook back and contacted my Gateway rep. He's saying that they've changed the specs on the website to a generic 60 g drive (I checked and it's still the Toshiba). I wouldn't have known about the hd issue if I hadn't come across this forum. I even discussed the hd issue w/ the sales rep before ordering and he assured me that I would get the Toshiba. He'll give me a $100 credit as alternative to the hd. I really like my notebook and I think that I'll take the offer and move on.

Yeah the price difference is actually about 20 bucks (at least at zipzoomfly), so getting 100 credits not bad. I actually ended up getting 70 credit a while ago after not being able to get the hard drive. Tough parts just trying to find something in the Gateway store worth getting thats not overpriced. In the end I bought a copy of windows xp home edition that I'm gonna ebay soon since they seem to retain value and sell pretty regularly on ebay.

well, i retried the DVD last night with a different player, and the sound was fine (excellent i might say!). I realized the first time I tried it that I had used PC Friendly (which failed to shut down and took 97% of the CPU). I will be removing that program!

Now, the only problem is my wireless throughput is way below what it should be. I read somewhere else the Intel card transmit power may be set to its lowest setting, so I'll try that tonight ...

Okay, I spoke to my Esale Advisor and he is sending me the 60GB Toshiba 5400RPM. Like I said before, I have always had GOOD EXPERIENCE with Gateway. It just took me with less than one minute with my Esales Advisor to have it all taken care of.

got fujitsu 4200 rpm drive

I got the Fujitsu 4200 rpm drive with my system. I'm probably not going to pursue getting the 5400 rpm drive, since I'm already going to replace the drive with a Toshiba 7200 rpm drive. I suppose I could probably resell the 5400 rpm for more, but I don't think it'll be worth it.

Here's my Sandra drive benchmarks with the 4200 rpm drive:

Drive Index : 21MB/s

Buffered Read : 18 MB/s
Sequential Read : 23 MB/s
Random Read : 19 MB/s
Buffered Write : 64 MB/s
Sequential Write : 23 MB/s
Random Write : 16 MB/s
Average Access Time : 11 ms (estimated)

Ordered M505XL on 2-3, delivered on 2-24

I went to a Gateway store to look at the machine before ordering which I was glad I did. The display is bright and the keyboard is nice to the touch unlike the Dells. Key placement is better too: delete, pg up, pg dn. Slot load DVD is convenient although somewhat noisy.

I had similar problems with back ordered info on website then conflicting information over the phone. So far I'm happy with the computer, but the delivery time was long and the conflicting info didn't help. If I order something again, I'll probably order online.
