XPS screen 25-ms response time?

Thread Starter
I just read a review of the XPS and it says that the screen has a response time of 25ms. I always thought that u needed to have a 20ms or less screen for gaming. Is this not true? Would anything above 20ms not cause ghosting or something?

Also does anyone know if the 9100 will have the same response time?

The problem is that everyone lies about response time ratings.

Pixel response time has a lot of variables. Case in point, I own 2 LCD's - a Dell 2000fp and a Samsung 213T. They are both rated at 25ms response time. The 2000fp has absolutely zero blurring that I can see. On the other hand, the Samsung 213T blurs like crazy by comparison.

The problem is that pixel response time is measured and marketed differently by every company out there. A pixel going from black to white is going to have a different response time than a pixel going from black to any other color. Sometimes companies measure across a variety of different situations and calculate an "average" response time. Some have hard measurements they take. Some probably don't measure scientifically at all!

The problem is that all of them are inaccurate because no one has come up with any kind of baseline measurement for rating LCD pixel response. There's no industry-established method. I've heard people say that CRT's all have a pixel response of anywhere from 8 to 13ms. I'm not sure where any of those numbers come from either.

Bottom line: The pixel response time measurement is largely meaningless marketing BS. Ignore the spec and see how it behaves in person if at all possible. That's the only true way to tell if it blurs in gaming or video.

Most of the popular lcd's and notebooks have been researched to death. That said, the majority of the commonly quoted numbers given my forum goers here, at Anandtech etc is total response time...rise+fall. 25ms is pretty good. You have to REALLY look to see blurring as my 1800fp has that response time and I literally have to concentrate hard to notice any blurring whatsoever.

Karl - I am VERY surprised that the Samsung 213T blurs like crazy in comparison to the 2000fp. I've had a chance to play with both and they were both a thing of beauty...alas too rich for my blood... In fact thtt sounds like something wrong with that 213T as in my opinion and those of many other's that one helluva LCD panel. Here's AT's review of that panel:

Nope, went through several at Best Borrow...errrrr... I mean... Best Buy.

The 213T is a blurry mess, particularly in darker games. Dell 2000fp has never had that problem.

Again, when measuring rise+fall times, there's no set standard. You have no idea what you're rising and falling to. A company won't tell you how it tests rise+fall - it could be testing black to white, grey to white, grey to black, whatever. The numbers are meaningless and there's no user-centric way to measure them yourself accurately.

INteresting about the 213T. I have only played on a friend's and like I said it looked fabulous to me. Who am I kidding anyways, I"m talking about it like I'm ever going to buy it.
