5660 Problems

Had a 5660-U for 6 days now and it's been working erratically.

2.53 p4
40 GB @ 5400
64mb Radeon 9k
512 pc 2100
WinXp Pro

After installing 3dMark03 I began running tests. It handles WoF fine, but everything goes to hell afterwards. It doesn't even run the third gaming test, and windows pops in after what appears to be a timeout saying that it "recovered from a device failure" and I should restart to regain functionality.

Going to try previous 3dMark models, but I'm not sure if it's the system or the software.

Device failure is more than a little disconcerting though.

I'm using the Feb 17. release drivers from the Sager website btw.

Any thoughts? Advice?

By rolling back the drivers from the sager site and using the catalyst 3.1 drivers I actually made it through the benchmark tests

A whopping score of 841.

Something is very wrong with this.

I tried it on an 8887 demo model and the 3rd test did the same thing to me, then I tried it on my dekstop and it also did it, so I assumed I had a corrupt download and haven't tried to redownload it. Have to tried downloading it from another place?

Are you overclocking? If so, default everything back to normal.

Cheers.

I haven't even gotten that far yet, taking your advice from your PM and going slowly. Was just pleased the computer held through the benchmark tests.

Have you used Powerstrip?

If you are using powerstrip then set your DDR to 182. That should take care of the low score that you were worried about. However I removed powerstrip and ran 3D Mark 2003 - scored 840 - so I guess you're not too far away from the ballpark

Still...keep us updated...

Cheers!!

installed Powerstrip, DDR clock is at 190 right now, things are working pretty well, and the keyboard and things actually feel cooler than before if you can believe that, they were feeling hotter than they should be with factory drivers installed.

Anyone know how far I can push this? this is my first foray into the (over)clocking world. Not much info out there that i've found with the ocing of notebooks, with good reason

thx

In all honesty,I'd say the mobility radeon 9000 in the 5660 to be barely overclockable. On my 5660 I can get a comfy 10% oc on the core, but the memory won't tolerate any oc at all.I start to get crazy artifacts if I try 10% on the memory.Either it's just too hot in their,or Sager just doesn't use the best quality oc friendly vram chips.

your DDR is on 190??

Hey you are already overclocking the GPU - turn it down to 182 and take my advice - just use the "Set Adapter Defaults" and leave it that way as long as its doing your games well.

Once you find a game that demands a little more - clock it higher to the 182 setting and dont cross 200!!

Leave it at the settings that came from the factory - more than your clock speeds it must be something with your OS, Drivers or something else. 3D Mark 2003 ran fine at my clock speed of 152.

Just make sure everything else is ok before playing with the clocks - take my advice on this and leave the clocks alone

They set it that way at the factory for some reason - dont defeat their efforts.
