Screen Scratches

I am back from the desert and am extremely happy, but I do have an issue with my laptop screen. My spacebar sticks up just a hair farther than the rest of the keys and it appears that a little bit of that desert dust was able to mar my screen, and give it a few tiny marks. the rub marks are not very noticable, but the deeper scratches, though small, are deep enough to diffract light, giving the effect of 2-3 adjoining dead pixels. They do "move" when I look at them from a sharp angle so I know that the pixels themselves are functional

Does anyone know if this is covered by warranty or how I might be able to fill in these tiny deep marks. I am on the fence about the warranty, aspect, maybe other people notice that their right hand space bar end is higher (barely) than the rest of the keys.

Thanks for the advice,

Randy

There are mats you can buy that fit between the keyboard and the screen - I dont use them myself as I rarley transport - but I would if I did. As for damage alreay done I think you may be able to RMA it - it is afterall a defect in the keyboard.

I use a privacy filter from 3M both for privacy and to protect the screen. Unfortunately it's only loosely held in front of the screen and dust does get behind it. Didn't work out quite like I wanted.

You could try some of the CD repair kits out there to see if they can fill in the scratches. Test it out on a window pane or such first. The stuff used to fill in stone chips in car glass would seem to be good alternative as well.

My screen is at Sager right now for replacement and the tech that examined it found the scratches and wouldn't replace the screen under the warantee.

I'm going to try and find some of those PDA stick on covers big enough for a 15" screen when I get my 5680 back.

That is a good idea bratag, but I am still wondering about the dirt factor.

Hmm, Chorlton, did your scratches match the keyboard pattern or were they in random places? I am not sure what to do, filling them in was an idea I also had but I am not sure if the screen would have too much glare. wel shall see.

I have been hoping for an opinion from the man, or woman who would be qualiifed to make the recommendatino to RMA, perhaps I will message them directly.

Thanks

I didn't have any keyboard marks, just bruises and some really small dust scratches. I never even noticed the scratches in use, you had to get really close to see them. They were never big enough to obscure any pixels.

The 3M privacy filter is really very stiff and it would be hard to get a localized area of pressure through it. If there were any pressure points, it would apply to a large area of screen. I had the opposite problem though, there wasn't enough pressure holding the filter to the screen and it would move around in transport and rub dust particles against the screen. (Note to self, duct tape the filter next time?)

The first bruise that I got seemed to be right where the mouse buttons are raised up, but the second one was just right in the middle of the screen.

randy, I am pretty sure if your machine is still under warranty and the marks match the keyboard and the keys are sticking up, in other words, the scratches are a result of the keyboard being defective, it would be covered under the warranty, indeed, I'd ask for a new keyboard as well, what's the point of replacing the screen if its just going to get scratched again.

As to filling them in, I don't know of anything that would work without showing as badly as the scratches do already. Its a plastic and thats really hard to fix.

But yeah, the only way you are going to get an authoritative opinion is to talk to SAGER Technical. If you have access to a good digital camera, I'd suggest taking some pictures and emailing those to SAGER TS so they can see the problem. If you can, get a picture of the keyboard and the screen so you could overlap them and show the registration between the scratches and the keyboard.

Whatever happens, do let us know what happens.

PS, welcome home. Hope you have a safe tour here as well.
