8790 12/8 Cell battery vs Subwoofer/TV/Remote Option

Ok, we need to get the people who received their 8790 and see if it's at all worth it to get the 8 cell battery. I know many of you opted for the Subwoofer/TV/Remote Option and I too want that as well but I'm trying to decide whether that is a good idea or not. This is coming from a person who only knows that the higher number (12) means more laptop power. However, if it's only going to be for another 10 minutes, then it's definately not worth it. Regardless, I'm talking gibberish here so I need people to get those laptops and test those power batteries out!

I will let you know when I get it but I also believe you can take out the sub woofer and TV Tuner and put the bigger battery in if you want to use the bigger batter on certain days then pop the woofer and Tuner back it. At least that is what was described to me when I ordered it.

The 8 cell battery is supposed to last between 1 and 1 1/2 hour. The 12 cell battery is supposed to last between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. Don't know the loading and use that would case the time differences.

I agree with paledrifter; however, don't know if you have to take out both or just the tuner. This is because another reseller offers the 12 cell and the subwoofer; hower have a 6-in-1 card reader -v- the 7-in-1 card reader.

One thing to note... you can only have 1 device in at a time between the TV Tuner and the subwoofer... and you can only fit them in with the 8 cell battery. They are easily swappable though.

With the 12 Cell battery, it takes the space of not only the 8 cell battery, but where the subwoofer or TV Tuner goes. So, you can't fit the TV Tuner OR the Subwoofer in if you're using the 12 cell battery. To make it more confusing, you HAVE to have either the subwoofer or the TV Tuner when you have the 8 cell battery in because they help hold it in. I know it's a bit confusing, but expected with so many options.

Maybe this is more clear:

The subwoofer and TV Tuner can only be used 1 at a time because they use the same bay and they can only be used with the 8 cell battery because the 12 cell takes up too much space. When using the 8 cell battery, you HAVE to have either the TV Tuner or the subwoofer installed to hold the battery in.

Is that better?

Thanks Adam...I appreciate the input...that is exactly the kind of detail I was looking for on this issue!

Disappointing......

The pull down for the subwoofer/TV Tuner option does not even indicate that these are mutually exclusive when used. It does mention that the 12 Cell Battery is mutually exclusive of the T/V Tuner....

The inference is that they can both be used together.

Maybe the pulldown needs to clarify this to avoid confusion in the future.

yea good idea... that confused me to when i first looked at it.

There, I tried to clean up the details of it a little better in the system builder. Sorry for the confusion.

Much better... I hope that they are easy to swap....

Yes, they're very easy to swap, and if anyone was confused by how it was worded before, feel free to change your order. You won't get knocked back in line.

here's a follow-up question, i have the habit of not leaving my notebook battery plugged in all the time because i don't want to mess up its memory (yes i know that's its Li-Ion but i'm still a bit skeptical -- can someone clear this up for me once and for all btw?) anyway, let's say i decide not to put any battery in the 8790. will the tv tuner/subwoofer hold-in without one?

If the battery is like the 4780 then the battery is not built into the cover. So you can remove the battery, but you still need to put the cover back on. One to keep dust out and two because the battery cover is needed to keep the TV Turner / Sub-Woofer cover in place. There are comments on the battery life time in/out of the Laptop but you will have to look for them because they do not all agree.

i got a better question
lets say i take out the 8 cell battery will i be able to use that bay for the tv tuner
and then still use the subwoofer in the other bay
or vice versa

Thats a good question Dirtstyle, I was just thinking about it. I also have another question. Where I live, I always have power outs. So if I am using the laptop (battery inside) plugged into in ac plug and the power goes out. Does the laptop turn off or does it automatically switch to use the battery? In other words do I need a UPS for an 8790?
All laptops (well 99.99% of the many I have used anyway) will keep going if AC power is dropped. The reason they do is the way the power/charging circuits work.

I had the funny experience once of working during a rain storm at night that knocked out power to the neighbourhood. I was the internal modem connected to my ISP located in a different neighbourhood. All of a sudden everything around me went dark, and their I was staring into my laptop screen which didn't even blink. Kept working right thru until they got power restored .

Very informative. Exactly what I was looking for....

Adam, can you be more intuitive and tell us exactly what are the length of time these batteries can hold. Right now, we're guesstimating.

On the other hand, with regards to the TV Tuner/Subwoofer. You can look at it as getting two things for the price of one. In addition, I guess you can upgrade and getting the 2nd battery later on. I thought it was one or the other and that's it.
