A8Js

I've been looking for a new laptop that is portable but can still play games well. Basically, it came down to me wishing there was an XPS between the Dell m1710 and the m1210. I was debating whether or not to get the 1210, when I was reccomended Asus as another good in between option.

Specifically, the W3J or the A8Jm/s, because they are 14 inch, with good gpu's. I looked into it, and I gotta say, Asus appears to be retarded. If there is any logic or redeeming qualities to their annotation system, please enlighten me. And their website is god-awful.

But I was still able to find information (from other sites) about the computers, and I was specifically interested in the A8Js. But according to these forums, the computer isn't as good as stated. 5400 rpm HDD, only 1 gig, ambiguous bluetooth, and a bigger pricetag suddenly makes this computer less appealing than before.

I get the feeling that Asus has the computer I'm looking for, 14-15 inch, good dedicated gpu, good other stuff, but their website is oh so horrible that it is the most worthless resource I have found concerning their laptops yet. Apparently, asuslaptops.com sells and has information on them, but it's apparently UK only (I'm in the US), and I couldn't find the A8 computers at all...

So is there an Asus model that would suit me? Preferably Core 2 duo. And how would I buy it? And is there a way to get a A8Js with good RAM? Why does Asus make this so difficult?

Take a look at PortableOne: http://laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/merc...gory_Code=P1MX

You can get the A8Js specked out with 2GB of RAM, BlueTooth, and a better hard drive for several hundred dollars cheaper than the Dell XPS M1210. I was in the exact same situation as you when I found out about the A8Js several weeks ago and I'
ve just been waiting for it to come out. I'll be ordering one for myself this week...

Oh my god, I love you. That is perfect.

Even upgraded, it's still cheaper than other options. And, it is exactly the size I'm looking for.

Now I just have to convince myself that Asus is the right choice. That computer certainly has the specs I'm looking for (like exactly), but I have no experience with Asus, or Portable One for that matter, at all. And how does warranty work out in this situation?

Don't tell my wife!

Both Asus and Portable One have a really good reputation, and I think that the warranty is handled by Portable One.

What exactly is a transflective display? Is that their terminology for a matte screen?
No, it's a screen that's easier to view under dirrect sunlight.

So what's the A8Js equivalent of Dell's Truelife (reflective display)?
The standard display that comes with the laptop...

Thanks Dalantech. I just ordered an A8JS from PortableOne today. I chose the 2GB RAM, the 100GB 7200RPM HDD, and Bluetooth. After ordering, I sent an email to sales requesting no dead pixels, and asked for an estimated ship date. They replied within 10 minutes stating they'd make sure there were no pixel issues, and said it should ship around the end of next week (apparently they're a little backlogged with bluetooth installations). So far so good! Can't wait to get it.

Cool I hope you post pics, would be interested in seeing them since the ones available on the web aren't that great. I'm torn about getting this laptop, on one hand the performance and weight seem great but I don't like the way the chasis looks, its quite plain and IMO ugly. Also buying it from a reseller rather than Asus directly makes me a bit weary about the kind of support I'd receive.

I agree. The specs, size, and price are all great, but the lid appears to have that odd tapered thing going on, which bothers me on laptops because it makes it akward to grip and it doesn't look like it's closes correctly. And supposedly it doesn't have external volume controls, which I find very odd and annoying. I agree on the reseller thing, too.

I kind of want to see some actual reviews of the computer before I get one. This is annoying because the specs are so perfect, but I just don't know if the computer itself is that good. I can get over the external imperfections if the preformance is what I want, but I don't want to have to get over anything, I want it to be right.

Yeah, I hear what you guys are saying. The volume control and the lid don't make much difference to me. Based on reseller ratings, I think the company seems good. Either way, I'll be the guinea pig. I'll post pictures, a review, and some benchmarks when it arrives.

I like the review that you did -very well written! It was one of the things that convinced me to go with Asus for my next laptop.

I just placed my order this morning for an A8Js with 2 GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR. I don't have a PC -I use a laptop full time so I wanted to "max out" the new machine...
Wow Dalantech finally you buy a maxed-out A8Js? Please tell us how is the benchmarks when you get it...
has any of you bought the Auto/Air charger from portable one and actually used it on a plane? maybe during your recent trip?

want to know if the power port on the plane actually has enough power to drive the battery on the A8Js. Found out from portable one that

battery requires 90W
auto/air adapter outputs up to 90 W

but from this link from aa, the power port on the Boeings only outputs 75 W.

http://www.aa.com/content/travelInfo...horEvent=false

so mathematically, there's not enough juice to power the lappie.

any of you folks here have any first hand experience to share?

I just ordered the MX from Portable One (T7200,2 GB RAM, 100GB HD). I am California so I had to pay sales tax.

I'll be reviewing it for my web site -I'll post an announcement in the reviews forum when it's online.
