What do we want in the next version of XPS M1710? - Page 2

I would be happy to see the chassis remain the same and Dell offering new mainboards and upgraded video cards down the road as needed rather then us haveing to buy a whole new laptop. We need longer life expectancy and upgrade paths Darnet!!!!!

Perhaps there should be a atheros card aswell?
1. SLI capability and DX10 hardware
2. No more light leakage.
3. D/bay
4. PCMCIA - Expresscard is still too infantile
5. 2 Hard Drives in RAID
6. Integrated webcam
7. Wi-Fi catcher
8. Native 64bit chipset / 800/1066FSB / DDR800+ support
9. Dual Link HDMI support
10. AND BRING BACK THEM COOL ASS 3D STEREO GLASSES! Imagining BF in 3D...

who would need a desktop anymore with that setup...
SLI AND 2 HD's...hmm...I really just dont see why ppl want raid setup in laptop...I'd rather have an external hd or what the hell, even a dvd-ram drive than 2 internal hd's...
o yea internal mic, why don't we have that?

I know that lpt and serial ports are obselete, but some other retro functions like an IR port and an audio line in jack would be useful.
A docking station/stand with an incorporated cooling system would be nice.
Wireless N would be useful as well.

So, for the XPS M1710 santa rosa version comming out early 2007 there is a need for?

Powered Firewire

Webcam

Mic

anything else that is really important in the Santa Rosa version, that can be put in easily and reasonably?

Don't think it will be early 2007. Santa Rosa's release isn't till 2nd Qtr.

I read somewhere H1 2007 and also start of 2007. I guess they can ship them out since I have a feeling they are working on the quadro intel platform also

Dual Link DVI

Dual Sli as Standard

Quad Sli Optional

Dual Sata Drives (Raid)

we still talking about laptops here?

Santa Rosa in middle of 2007

Notebookreview had a link today saying that Santa Rosa would be in 2Q2007. That is a 6-8 month wait, IF vista actually ships on time.

As others have already mentioned; I'd really like a Cam built into the display and a mic also.

I would like to see at least the option for a desktop version of the Core 2 Duo (doesn't have to be the X6800 but a 6700 would be nice).

A good quality display (no leakage, even backlighting) would be great in both 15.4 and 17 inch variety.

Back-lit keyboard would be awesome, even as an option. And so would a slot loading optical drive be.

The option to have no OS, or at least the original MSFT OS disk with no extra OEM bloat ware so you can really do a clean install.

That's all for now.

We are definetly talking laptops!

I believe that the Design can build in a webcam and mic, and also they can improve the firewire port drastically. Vista I believe will be offered on time, and I believe that Intel will ship out the Santa Rosa Laptop platform in January.

I know Intel is eager to compete with AMD and I know that the kensington already has been tested. So, with this info and with the technology race on again I believe that in January there will be a new Dell XPS M1710 motherboard, with 800 mhz FSB and with the latest Intel CPU, with The DX10 GPU.

So, I really want the Firewire port to be working with ALL soundcards (Texas Instruments???)(Powered????)

So.... Dear friends here!! I know Dell reads this forum, just say what you agree with... I go for the Firewire port, Webcam, mic and SLI(if possible)

backlit keyboard would also be awesome!!!

Maybe off topic a bit, but I would love for Dell to reward it's loyal customers with a 40% off coupon good for your next purchase off the "updated" model.

I paid $1700.00 way back when for my GEN2 - XPS, and yes that was with a 40% off coupon.

You would think Dell can offer me some sort of bone to upgrade.

This was my 2nd purchase from Dell, I spent over $3500.00 in less than 1 year.

Just my thoughts....

sure hope someone from Dell reads this!! Would love an upgraded XPS M1710 with the santa rosa, since it still have some minor glitches and a firewire port that needs checking!

How long can we make our wishlist? It's absolutely criminal that there isn't a built-in microphone, because it would have been so easy to incorporate. A few other wishes in no particular order;

Built in mike
Some form of real QC on LCD panels - the light leakage issue is ridiculous
A real audio driver that supports some of the audio chip features
The ability to swap out the optical drive with a 2nd HD or battery
Overclocking support, rather than trying to lock down bus & multipliers
The ability to order a serial port or at least PCMCIA
An integrated TV tuner
Processors that don't lock you out of undervolting settings
Wi-fi catcher
The option to not pay a tithe to Microsoft
Support for any future video card that physically fits a standard format & is able to stay below a specified power/heat level
edit: And a numeric keypad. There's certainly room for it.

And a few things that I could care less about - integrated webcam, LED's, backlit keyboards, biometrics, HDMI or SLI.
