8887 - Ping sound on shutdown

Hiya all, again

THis 8887, P2.4, 1 gig RAM, WIN XP Pro, give an audible PING sound as the final effort of shutdown. THis has been consistent since I first got this used system a few weeks ago.

Is this sound customary?

If not, any idea what might be causing it and whether or not it should be a cause for concern?

thanks

That's the bell that signals the squirrel to stop running in his cage and thus cuts the power to the laptop...

Well, it's only a theory.

Nah, that's the wiretap hanging up.

Are you sure it isn't the head of the hard drive bangin up and down as the power is shut off -- in distress..

Just Kidding....

Hi, yes this is normal according to the makers of the drive. I too thought something was bad, never heard that sound in the desktop world although my computers (even my Sager) is a 24/7 computer (only battery drain and vent blow/clean see my Sager go down). I recorded the sound and contacted Hitachi (Toshiba drives make the same sound) and they said it was normal. I will interject a personal observation, before my Sager became a solid 24/7 crash free computer, I had a hard drive issue. It seems the drives “ping” if there is a bootable OS on the drive. My 2nd data drive does not ping upon shutdown. During the first week I had this computer, and the hard drive issues, I made that drive the master and installed the OS on it (for the sake of testing at that time) and it did ping on shutdown. Once the drive was “zeroed” and became my data drive it stopped pinging upon shutdown. Again, just a personal observation.

ARW

Thank you for this..... I've had other laptops, most recently a Gateway 9150, as well as desktops.... and have never heard this kind of consistent sound at shutdown. I had not connected that the sound could be related to the hard drive.

THis system has only one hard drive, and as long as the PING sound on shutdown does not indicate a problem, I'll just enjoy it's song.

The drive is a TOSHIBA MK4019GAX [Hard drive] (40.01 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 23330934A, rev FA002A.

I'll also pass this info along to Ty at Sager who had no idea what this might be about.

Thanks again

Hi MJH, no problems at all. I was combing the boards for an answer too when I first got the Sager. A very new noise indeed since I too never heard it before, but considering I was living in the desktop world until buying this awesome machine, I thought maybe it has to do with the fact that portable hard drives need a faster way to park or shutdown due to the possibility of constant shock during usage / movement. Funny thing is, Sager told me right off the bat that the sound is normal, but I did know it was coming from the hard drive and told them right off the bat. Since I had other problems with my first drive (was a Toshiba 5400RPM 60Gig) I was convinced the sound had something to do with it (although the problem ended up being bad HD cache). I requested a Hitachi 60Gig 7200RPM replacement (to MFR match my Hitachi 80Gig) because Hitachi has an excellent set of “fitness” software testing tools for their drives (Toshiba does not release these tools to the public) and sure enough once I installed an OS on it, the “ping” returned. I have an 8890v (no RAID) so common hardware causing a problem is another thing we can rule out. Talking to Hitachi and playing the sound to them calmed my nerves, but it sure bothered me when I first got the machine. Take Care, Andy

I'm getting a weird sound when I shutdown now too. I'm not sure it's the same "ping" sound that's been described, but I do know it only happens on my new hardrive I just installed. The sound it makes starts off pretty high and starts going down in tone, but it does cut off rather sharply after about a second. I've had my 8890 since September and the supplied drive does not do this. If I can find some webspace, I'll post a recording of it. Could it being a 5400rpm drive be the cause?! It certainly does not sound normal as ARW suggests

EDIT: I forgot to mention this happens right at the very end of the shutdown sequence. The sound gets 'sharply cut off' RIGHT when the rest of the machine stops.

Might be nothing more than the "heads parking" on the HDD.

Surely that's not normal though. It's pretty loud!

Edit: And my other drive doesn't do it - can anyone with the 5400rpm Toshiba (MK6022GAX) drive comment?

EDIT 2: I just got a reply from Toshiba's tech support. Very impressed by the speed of reply. He says I'll need to get a replacement. Bummer...

Yeah, it's kinda loud - especially for the faster-spinning drives. I notice it in my external 2.5" enclosure (for a 5400rpm drive), but not in the same type of enclosure for a 4200... and I've heard them on laptops.

I'm 80% sure it's a hard-drive parking thing, like G-Omaha stated.

I upgraded my 3360V, now my wife's laptop, with the 40GB 5,400rpm version of that drive and do hear more clicks and other sounds than I did on the original drive. I would monitor it and see if it gets worse before I'd worry about ir too much.

Well, like i mentioned, the tech support guy from Toshiba said I'd need a replacement. So now I'm wondering if it's worth trying to upgrade to the 80GB drive. It'd mean I'd lose the 16mb buffer... but I'd have another 20 gigs. What'd you two (G and myrkat) suggest?

Not sure that it would be worth the extra dollars. If you NEED the extra space, then that's ok, if you don't, you will only be wasting your money. If Toshiba indicates a replacement, I'd go for it. Just make sure that you won't be charged for the replacement unit should the original unit be found to be OK during the RMA process.

Hmm, ok. Thanks G. And ignore the PM

I had the 5400rpm Toshiba (MK6022GAX) in my 8887 when I bought but is now in my old Dell and it never made a loud or high pitch noise on shutdown when it parks the drive. Both my Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM drives are more quite then the Toshiba.

Thanks dude. Sounds like an RMA

Did you have the Intel Application Accelerator installed in the Dell and not in the Sager? It could be that the app was parking the drive properly (clicking) vs. not properly (quiet) - this is a GUESS on my part, but it's something to ponder.
