Gaming for $2000?

Ok I'm a college student and I need a laptop I can take with me to classes, though I don't care how much it weighs or how large it is. My primary concern is gaming.. I don't have the room in my apartment for anything but a laptop, and I have a strict budget of $2,000 USD. Can anyone recommend the best gaming system for $2,000 or just under? I don't really care about other features, just its ability to run games as good as possible. Screen size also doesn't matter, just performance. I will be running HL2 and the new MS Flight Simulator X a lot. I hear FSX requires a lot to run smoothly so I'm particularly concerned I can't find a laptop for under $2k that will run this and other games well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I know I can't get much for this price but it's all I have...

Check www.cyberpowerpc.com and www.powernotebooks.com you might find some good deals there. Hope this helps.

I doubt very much your going to find a laptop for under 2000 that will handle FSX. HL2, no problem. Go for something with a 7900 GS, or 7900 GTX, such as e1705, m1710, or m90. I have a Dell e1705 with a 512 mb 7900 GTX im possibly looking to get rid of thats under your budget, so i can build a desktop. You may PM if you are interested.

if you are lucky you can find a m90 for under 2000bux with a quadro 2500m at the outlet.

Good call on the outlet. Some absolutely fantastic deals there. Look in the early hours of the morning when people are asleep, because stuff does not last long there.

Everyone,
thanks for your comments/suggestions. I'd never even heard of the Dell Outlet site until your posts. This morning (early) I went on and I think I found a pretty good deal. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could tell me if this is a decent gaming system that can adequately handle Flight Sim X:
Dell M90 (certified refurbished)
Core duo T2600 (2.16GHz)
2GB DDR2 SDRAM
512mb NVidia Quadro FX 2500M (dedicated)
60GB (7200rpm) hard drive
17 inch WXGA screen
DVD/CD-RW combo drive
Price: $1599 + tax and s/h

I know the hard drive is small, but it seemed worth it given the video card and ram. It seems like a good deal to me but I'd like any opinions while I still have time to cancel the order. I mainly plan on running games - can this handle the high end stuff given it's a laptop?

are you SURE you want to carry a 17" around a college campus....and if you want to get a really good deal then I would look in the forsale section of these forums.

Edit: Also I don't know where you are going to college at but at my college very few desks allow comfortable typing and it also seems like more and more profs aren't letting students use laptops b/c most ppl. just surf the net instead of take notes. So possibly you'll decide to just leave your notebook in your dorm/apartment and then a 17" would be great!!!

Nothing will handle FSX well yet with any pretty settings, but that right there is the best your going to get in a laptop form for two reasons, 1, it currently has the best video and almost the best processor, and its coupled with the lower resolution screen, so you wont be playing at higher than 1440x900 i think, although the games it will handle, will look worlds better on the uxga screen, ie Source. I personally went with the uxga and im glad i did seeing some of the complaints and quality issues with the xga. The screen would be the only thing holding me back from getting it.

Thanks everyone for the posts - it seemed like a good deal at the time and it still does so I'm going to stick with it. Last time I ordered new from Dell and it took 2+ weeks for it to get to my house, this time it's taking 2-3 days since it's already built and coming from an outlet - much better!

Yeah, 17" screen is big but I plan on using it more for gaming than for traveling and I live a block away from campus so it's not that bad. My last laptop (inspiron 9200) had a 17" screen too and it was too big to even use on airplanes, but I'm not really buying it for that anyway.

Thanks again for your help!

You got an awesome deal. That card should handle almost any current game with max settings at the xga resolution.
