Inspiron 5150 Owners MUST READ.

A must read for users with Inspiron 5150 especially if you are no longer under warranty.
This does not apply to users with 1100/1150/5100 series inspirons even though they share similar board and chasis design.

Deadline for this on your end is APRIL 02 2007.

my gf's 5150 has experienced overheating and system shutdowns several times, now the HD died!! How can she recover the lost data? I put the HD in an external USB case and it sounds like it tries to spin up but can't and I get a USB device malfunction message...

Put the HDD and caddy in the freezer (inside a sealed bag)until it is completely frozen. Then remove it and attach to a PC with an already loaded OS and access the HDD from that.

Quite often making the HDD extremely cold will allow enough time to get data off it. If the actual controller in the HDD has failed, this procedure may not work. But definately worth trying - freezing it will not hurt it one bit.

In the case of the file system being shot, ensure you have a file recover utility that can scan through the sectors on the disk and recover the file fragments.

It is possible that the HDD is not failed and that it is just a problem with the file system, in which case I would connect the HDD to a PC and run a CHKDSK /F /R c: or d: on it. If that doesn't fix the file system, then run the file recovery utility.

He states that the drive is struggling to spin up which is a tell tale sign of head crash however at this point it couldnt hurt to try the freezer bag method. Data recovery software is relatively cheap if you want to give that a shot. Worst case scenario a data recovery center charges roughly $500 per disk.

Weve changed platters here as well. Its a pain and you need to be sure its a clean environment but it can be done. You'll need an identical drive to do so..

On Another note.. The 5150's with Jack issues can be rectified easy enough. The LVC14A Chip was a more predominant issue on this model andgenerally reflowing the leads on the chip will suffice. If it does need repair the chip costs a whopping .49C per if I remember correctly. Litigation against Dell is next to impossible as far as I know. This is why you sign an electronic waiver upon purchase as it forces Arbitration as opposed to litigation. I'm not a lawyer but have heard its near impossible to get them into the arena. (Not that it would do any good anyway).. Goos luck and these issues are easy fixes generally..
