display jumps

I just got my new E1705 with the 7900GS and the Ultrasharp monitor. The LCD is made by sharp.

I have re-installed windows (as soon as I saw Macafe AV) and reloaded the drivers from Dell's website, except the Nvidia which I got from Nvidia.

It seems great, I haven't had a chance to run games yet, I am busy installing programs, but I have had a slight problem with the LCD.

As I use it, occassionally, the screen will for the lack of a better word, twitch or flicker. sorta like a blur then go right back to being clear.

any ideas?

Wow, you know, I didn't really want to complain about it and couldn't find the exact words for that problem either, but I have it, and I think you described it perfectly.

Just to explain timing to anyone who's wondering, it's a flicker that lasts like half a second, and it happens at different intervals depending on something - the something I'm not sure about yet, but I'm trying to pay attention to figure out a pattern and try to pinpoint it. However, it doesn't happen often when playing games, I think I've only had it happen once or twice. It doesn't usually happen often at all, I think the closest that two flickers have happened were probably about 5-10 minutes apart but that was extremely close, I've been on my laptop for about an hour now with no flicker.

Somehow I get the feeling that it might be happening during a cooldown time of the video card, like after exiting a game I seem to notice it more but before I play a game and get the card worked up I don't see it happen much. I would love to find the source of this problem but I have a feeling it's hardware and I really don't care enough to call and get a replacement part unless someone else can verify that the part is in fact the problem...

[EDIT] I do have the same exact screen too. Maybe we should both call and demand a different brand of screen then? I think I heard that LG is the best brand of screen - anyone reading this, if you know otherwise then please let us know, and anyone reading this who has an E1705 with the same problem, DEFINITELY post! [/EDIT]

Turn off PowerMizer completely, and see if that fixes it. Everytime I've had Powermizer turned on, it causes this occasional, random flicker/blur effect.

ok, I right clicked the desktop, then went to the Nvidia control panel option there. I disabled powermizer completely, it said something about battyer but i told it to stay off always. when I turned it off, it did a little jump, like it did before, so I am hoping that fixes it.

I will watch it tommorrow at work, well, later on today lol

This seems to happen on atleast all 7900GS Dell's (and most likely other nVidia GO cards as well) and I've also seen a similar thing happen on an e1505 with x1400.

I'm pretty sure that's it's just PowerMizer trying to do its thing and being rather obvious about it (it happens with mode switching when playing videos and the like too). I don't know if this is something nVidia could completely get rid of in future drivers, but I guess it's possible. For now, I just leave PowerMizer disabled as that completely resolves the issue and the flicker *really* irritates me, so at least for now, any drop in battery for me is worth it.

Btw, I'm running on a 7900GS as well on an LG display, so it's not characteristic to any display brand.

Most likely it is due to PowerMizer. By the way, what's the screen make that you have?

Did you mean which one I have, or the OP?

I'm running a V1 LG display. Very nice colors, ok leakage, only complaint is a somewhat noticeable crosshatch pattern in the gloss coat (characteristic of this particular part).

I beleive the OP is running a Sharp panel, not sure what revisions there are for that one...

I had the "jumping" problem before I had my laptop replaced; the old screen was SHARP, now I have LG (no clue which version). I will turn the powermizer on to see if I get the same problem on LG and let ya guys know. Thus to exclude any possibility of the panel-related problem.

After using it all day at work, I have not had the screen jump at all. at least I havent noticed it if it has. I have the Sharp V2 screen, and it does have some light leakage on the bottom. I don't know what is acceptable or not, but until I found this forum I just thought it was normal to have :-) My hp 23" widescreen lcd on my desktop has leakage also, but I dont really notice it playing games.

I will take some photos and put them online to see what yall think.

on a side note, I just ordered from dell a 500gb Mybook external hp HD, for $190, using the coupons I got after ordering the notebook! one more and I will have a terabyte :-)

mind you, when you take shots of your screen, the camera usually exaggerates the leakage.

yeah just like the camera adds 5-10 lbs

I have an XPS M1710 with the specs in my sig. It never used to do it but I recently reinstalled windows with the same (newest dell) drivers as before and now all the sudden it does that little screen jitter thing every minute or so. Ill try the powermizer thing and let you know tomorrow.
