I haven't seen much discussion on LCD monitors as of recent for notebooks.

I just registered today so I could finally ask a question. I have searched and read and read but have not really found the answers I was looking for.

Let me start off by saying that I am in the market for a notebook for the first time because a desktop will no longer fit my lifestyle (in the Navy and will not be living in the barracks any longer, but rather on the ship ). My main concern with a notebook has always been that the screen will not be good enough for what I would use it for. I am a huge Quake III player and ghosting is a major issue on a laptop. I used my mom's Fujitsu N series Lifebook to play Q3 RA3 and found it extremely difficult to be competitive due to the 24ms response time. I went from vitually unbeatable on my friends desktop to noob status on this notebook due to the screen alone. I am confident in my knowledge of what I want otherwise at this point other than the screen.

The two screens I see a lot of through Alienware and Dell (I know they are together in a way but still have independant design teams) are the WideXGA+ (1440x900) and the WideUXGA (1920x1200). I have been unable to find out what each of these screens different response times were. I even spoke with an Alienware rep over online chat and he was even unable to answer that question. First off does anyone know the answer to this? Also does anyone know if in the near future there will be better response time screens for laptops coming to the market?

I think that's it for now. I'm sure as responses come I'll have more questions or things to discuss.

from Cebit06

"Most laptops ship with panels having response times of 25ms or more. BenQ claims a 16ms time for its Joybook panels, achieved by a manufacturing technology that reduces the viscosity of the crystals that make up a display, allowing for faster-switching crystals (achieved by the lower resistance resulting from lower viscosity) and, consequently, a lower response time. The end result is said to be laptops that are well suited to gamers who demand superlative mobile performance - from the screen as well as the GPU and all other components. "

I appreciate the response however I have already found information like this. The problem with this information is that its over a year old. In fact that article was posted October 3rd, 2005. We all know how much technology can change in just a year span. Also I'd like to add that I was looking for a 17" display. I read somewhere that the 17" WXGA+ from Dell had a 16ms response time, however that was speculation. Ideally I'd like a display with something even better given that even that information was dated.

I'd say you're only real hope of finding this information out is seeing if current owners have opened up the laptop to get the exact LCD model numbers, and then looking up the specs at the LCD manufacturers website.

Panel specs from a few relatively popular LCD manufacturers:

Samsung panels: http://www.samsung.com/Products/TFTL...amily_cd=LCD02

LG.Philips panels: http://www.lgphilips-lcd.com/homeCon...prd300_j_e.jsp

AUO panels: http://www.auo.com/auoDEV/products.p...ems_id=2&ls=en

Seems the fastest for 17" WXGA+ is 16ms.

Well if the above information holds true then I will probably end up holding off until a month or so after Windows Vista comes out to see if anything better hits the market... This no PC thing is killing me though .

There are many gamers with gamming laptops and according to them ghosting is not an issue. Ask arround.

My sig has no ghosting whatsoever.
