That won't happen. It'll be in their next XPS lineup.

Expect a mobile launch in 07 :

It'd be awesome if they could get G80 Go in before Christmas.

Won't happen. Count yourself lucky if you can get a G80-equipped laptop before fall '07.

the question is going to be the form factor. regardless of the core design as long as Dell can get it in the same format (which i don't see why not) Dell could release it as an upgrade for the M1710 but I do agree that strategically it would make no sense to do so unless they offered them as an upgrade like they did the 7800.

I am expecting to see a new XPS laptop come out but only a minor revision. Technologically there is no real big step up to happen so we are actually looking at the XPS Gen2 to M170 Scenario all over again.

I am guessing that will happen in about 5 to 6 months

Assume that the development time for a mobile version of the g80 chips will take 6-8 months a with past products.

That is not the only question. Rumor has it that the G80-based cards will have very significantly increased power consumption. If that is the case, then
  • there will be no way, regardless of form factor, to upgrade current laptops to such a card
  • equipping a new laptop model with a graphics card that has twice or more of the power consumption of the current 7900GTX will require a very significant re-design of the heat management system.

In short, you can pretty much bet your last dollar that current-model laptops cannot be upgraded to DX10 cards.

Plus its going to take longer than usual to get these cards into mobile versions because of the power and heat differences between the current high end dx9 cards and the future dx 10 cards.

Exactly, the G80 (8800 GTX) is going to be a power consuming monster that will put out much more heat than current generation video cards. If Dell does add it to the next XPS, you can almost be assured it'll be a version with shader numbers cut in half (128 is the desktop). I hope Dell redesigns the 17" XPS completely and this time includes a more classy design (e.g. black piano finish on the lid like the top of the line Sony notebook) along with an integrated camera/mic and unlocked GPU/CPU. I doubt any of my wishes will come true though, more than likely it'll be a slight update to the current 1710 design (aesthetically) with the G80 mobile thrown in.

Yeah... I would not be suprised if it'll be Christmas '07 by the time you can buy a decent gaming laptop with hardware-DX10...

I'd say we'll be seeing them sooner than expected. If you think nVidia works only on the desktop version and then moves onto the mobile version afterwards, you're terribly mistaken.

I know there already have the 1000 watt power supplies for desktop computers in anticipation of the new power hungry DX10 cards
post #15 of 19
hmm

I gues that means Dual G80 cards are next for my Desktop

and a new PSU lol

I doubt the G80 will be available in mobile form. The desktop version simply eats power. I bet ATI has a mobile DX10 part out long before nvidia (roughly performing somewhere between the x1600/1800), but nowhere near as powerful as a "mobile G80" would be.

It would be stupid for Dell not to release a DX10 solution for this laptop especially after all of the work they did to upgrade the platform for vista...
I suspect (as its all anyone can do about the mobile G80 at this point) that as previously mentioned, we'll have a G80 chip with less shaders, and lower clocks to accomodate it into the mobile platform.

Dell can't release anything. All they do is package products produced and released by other companies. If Nvidia and ATI don't have DX10 parts in the channel, Dell will continue to ship DX9 parts.
