Best Cooler for an 8204

Just wondering what you guys recommend for best quality laptop cooler. I don't care so much about card readers or extra usb ports (if it has them im fine with that too).

Also, what software do you use to monitor temps? if there is any compatible with the 8204.

Thanks in advance

I've been pretty happy with Antec model I got from Circuit City ($15 after rebates). Plugs into the USB port for power (with a simple pass-through so the port remains usable) and has two fan speeds. The lower fan speed is effective, but still relatively quiet.

It keeps my 8204 from becoming too terribly hot... Note that it's a bit smaller than the notebook, which is fine for use on a desk but I don't think it would balance well on a lap.

Sorry, can't find a model number on it anywhere, but a search on Circuit City would probably turn it up.

Lapcool2 is great because it has 2 fans that blow UP onto the bottom of the laptop and has an thumb dial for speed. The fans blow a lot of air compared to a lot of others, and I got it for $19.

But in the end, I don't use it because if your laptop is getting too hot, using a cooler only helps a little bit and really you should find some way to get it stay cool without the cooler. Otherwise, it's probably going to die sooner instead of later from heat (just like my 5672 did). I improved the cooling of the 5762 and now it runs cool all the time.

What kind of things did you do to improve cooling on the actual laptop?

In my case, I had the vent cover mod installed and then I started ripping the case apart to find a way to up the voltage to the internal fan. The fan is rated at 5vdc, but the 5672 was only putting in 2.5vdc.

In the end, the best place to hot wire the fan is to a USB port, because there's 5vdc right there.

I didn't do that though in the end, because when I put everything back together and installed NHC, my fan now regularly gets 3.5vdc when it gets over 51degc for some reason. It seems to be something I accidentally did to the hardware more than the software. Before my fan never ran fast, but it overheated to the point that I had a HDD failure after 6 months and a burned (smoke coming out the side) motherboard by 7 months. They replaced the motherboard, CPU, and HDD.

When they returned it to me, it would get up to 91degc at the CPU and start to fail. Now it never gets over 51degc in regular running and maybe up to 59 or 60 when gaming...

It's a lot noisier, but I am so happy to hear that noise because when I do, it means my laptop isn't going to fry again.

I don't want to find to try to find out what really changed it because I am afraid the fan speed will go away.

My 8204 reaches about 80C when decoding HDTV off of satellite. Frankly it scares me when it gets that hot, im trying to prevent anything burning out.

Thanks for the replies guys

If anyone tells you it's ok that it gets up to 80C, ask them if they'll pay for it when it blows up, because it will sooner instead of later.

If you want a quick fix, pull off the bottom access panels and stick it on a lapcool2....

Just putting a regular laptop on a laptop cooler only helps a little bit. You have to get that air in there somehow.
