My Inspiron XPS mini-review and benchmarks (vs. AW 51m) - Page 2

I think Ive got it! The Xbox Date raped the 8600 to create the unwanted yet under estimated monstrosity!

ROTFLMAO

My, harsh words. I have the 9100, and wouldn't trade it for any other laptop. (Okay, maybe something from VoodooPC, but their prices are rediculous. :P)

Yes, of course no laptop is going to match the performance of a pc. I'm glad your case weighs little more than the iXPS. Mind adding your mouse, keyboard, and speakers? Ah, silly me, I also forgot a monitor. Now weigh your system, and tell me all of that is little more than the XPS. I hope you can find outlets, too, when you're on the go.

The point of these Dells is to have an uber set up, anywhere. It's powerful enough to be your only computer for everything, and you can take it whever you go with no trouble. If you're telling me 9 lbs. is too much... seriously, it's time to get in shape.

I know I'm satisfied; it's just what I wanted. My 9100 outperforms anything at my price range by a wide margin, has a great screen, is very solidly built, and (in my humble opinion) looks perfect. I don't know about you guys, but I think the Alienwares look too much like toys, but that's a different topic.

Ahh, too much. I'm done now.

Hehe... I just realized I never posted my decision...

I'm keeping the iXPS.

Thanks for the review, Geed. Between your comparison and the MaxPC article, I went with the Inspiron XPS. It should be here this week too!

Nice review, thanks for the info, I would have thought the 51M would have benchmarked closer to the XPS. Good info will have to share it with some friends who just think Dell is junk and Alienware is the only way to go.

I ordered one as well (welcome to the bandwagon . chiLLfactor, whe is yours due to land? (I have September 10th as my lucky day.)

I think it would be cool to check one out, but I can have better performance out of my A7N8X D/3200+ tower and it doesn't weigh too much more, and is a whole lot cheaper. I'm glad your enjoying the XPS (it is fast for sure) but seriously, a Latitude D600 (what I have) seems like what a laptop is supposed to be. For gaming and pure speed my home-built will do the job.

Have fun with it though.
Other than being marketed as gaming machines, the XPS/9100 are not laptops. They have significant cooling requirements that preclude them for being used while placed on one's lap, and have few power saving features. They fall under the category of: "desktop replacement" notebook.

They are big, heavy, run hot, and have a short battery life. They don't qualify as laptops. Calling the XPS/9100 a notebook pushes the outter limits of the definition.

I wonder if there is a big performance difference between the 3.2EE vs the 3.4EE.... Any thoughts?
The extreme edition processors are just regular northwoods with an extra 2MB of incluside L3 cache. With that in mind, the difference between a 3.2EE and 3.4EE is exactly 200MHz. Difference in performance is minimal - just like the difference between the 3.2 and 3.4 regular p4s.

Nice comparison! Very well done. Could do with some pictures though.

Great review, I've always thought that I'd go for the Alienware 51m over any Dell but now that I've fixed my friends Inspiron 4000 and see that Dell does make good laptops I'm going for the Dell.
I just checked Dell's site and with the current 15% discount and an extra 5% discount from techbargains.com I can get a fully tricked out XPS with the 3.4GHz P4 & 256mb ATI 9800 video card + all the bells and whistles for $2800.

I like the review. So much for Dell desktop-replacements not being any good. pshaw

Thank you for your thoughts. However longevity for me was the caveat. I hope I didnt make a poor decision to get the 3.2 EE vs the non-EE 3.4
