Presario 2190US completely dead, no lights..

No power lights, no charging lights, nothing happens. Tested the battery and the power supply, both good, but no lights come on. I suspect the motherboard is blown or shorted out or something, any other ideas? How would I test the motherboard if I get it taken apart that far? Where would I find a new one if I need it?

ebay if u r lucky and willing to take the chance
. best bet is compaq/hp itself, actually replacement cost is not bad if u want to hold on to the laptop, if not, sell it in pieces and save the $ toward the next laptop

cheers ...

Just so I'm clear, I have to use a Compaq motherboard for this? I assumed Compaq just used components from other manufacturers, and other boards would work if they were the same form factor, as in a Desktop. Is this not the case?

Found the answer, mobo specific to laptop.

you can get your board repaired too in most cases. unless it has a nasty surge and took out traces and some layers of the logic board, then you are better off buying one

Yeah, I'm hoping it's the power input socket on the mobo which I imagine takes a lot of stress. This laptop took a pretty good spill at one point in it's life but kept on working, maybe it was on borrowed time after that.

does it feel really loose?

does it power on if you are holding it gently at different angles?

There is some play in it, but I don't know if it was like that before or not. It does seem a little looser than it should be. Moving it around does not make any lights come on nor will it power up.

Well I took it apart down to the motherboard, everything but the heat sink and processor. I unplugged the fan to see if that might make a difference, (if it were shorted out), but no change. The board is getting power to it beyond the power connector. I get 18 volts on the board at various contacts across the board. However, since there are so many small connections I suppose all it would take is one bad one that I'm not finding.
It must be the board, but I'd hate to get a replacement and still not have it work.

BIOS chips are known for failure on these.. The SST39SF040 Are still being used on the ZD7K series and weve seen them fail here as well. Verify the 5V input if you go to alldatasheet.com and dig up the .pdf file for the chip. (Its one pin right of center on the end with the knocked off corner or designator mark).. If you have the 5V here and no outputs the problem may be this chip). If you dont have the 5V reference check the small diode just below and right of the jack on the Athlon models for 19V in and out. This is prone to shorting as well and will not run off adapter if it does. Otherwise suspect a shorted or open FET in the secondarys.. Glad we dont get too many of these piles in these days as weve repaired hundreds of them..Good luck!

I just got a used mobo so hopefully that will get me back up and running.

If it does let us know.. We'll take the old board for refurb/parts and pay for it either way.. Good luck dude! If you need free reassembly help call or yell back here..

Got the new mobo installed and it's working!
You still interested in the old one?

It also has the 2.4 gig celeron, fan, and heatsink still on it if you're interested in that as well.
