External Hard Drives with Old Laptop Hard drives?

I just got an external hard drive enclosure and a new hard drive for my notebook and I want to access the files I have on my old hard drive. The problem is that when I plug the USB cable in, I can't access the files. Is there something special I have to do to make my external hard drive accessible? I thought it would be like plugging in a flash drive and going into my computers and opening it like a folder but I guess it's not like that.

If someone knows what I should do, please let me know.

Thanks!

Does the drive exist in My Computer? If not, have you connected the hard drive to the enclosure correctly? Sometimes they need to be jumpered to master.

Oh I figured out the problem. My USB wire has 2 USB connectors as well as one that connects to the hard drive. I guess it needs both USB connects to power the thing.

Reason for the 2 USB plugs is that there isn't always enough power available to power a HD from a single USB port (esp. on older computers). Therefore, they give you 2 (or a power plug for the external case).
