So I just got a Lenovo Yoga 13. This is my review.
As what I primarily do is writing and programming, having a good keyboard is critical for me, which is why a tablet alone can’t work for me, and...
I have owned dozens of laptops in a variety of brands, and had many different laptops provided for my use at work. Without question, this is the finest I have owned. The Alienware M17x R2 is a...

Wahey, finally a UK seller has got the Sager8790 in the UK. It's rock direct and they're currently selling at £1600 (approx $3200). Anyways, here's the link
I priced up a 8790 from pctorque with everything. With the current USD-GBP exchange rates it came to just over £2000 with 3 years extended warrenty etc. I think I would be tempted to do this although rockdirect do have a good reputation.
I used agearnotebooks to get this but it's the same as I configured on pctorque:
1. Display: 17 inch WXGA+ (1440 x 900) TFT Active Matrix Display
2. Processor: 3.4C GHz Intel P4 (Northwood) Processor - 800MHz FSB Speed
3. Graphics & Video: ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON™ 9700 8X AGP with 256MB DDR Dedicated VRAM
4. Memory: 2.0GB (2 x 1024MB SODIMMs) Dual Channel DDR400 SDRAM (+$520.00)
5. Hard Drive: 60GB 7,200RPM Ultra DMA Hard Drive (+$125.00)
6. CD/DVD/CDRW Drive: Combo 2X DVD(+/-)R/RW/CD-RW Drive w/Softwares (+$166.00)
7. Floppy Drive: None.
8. 2nd Hard Drive/Modular Bay: 2nd 60GB 7,200RPM HDD w/Bracket (+$289.00)
9. RAID Setting: None.
A. TV Tuner / Subwoofer: TV Tuner with Remote Control (NTSC) and Subwoofer (+$100.00)

F. Bluetooth Wireless: Built-in Bluetooth Wireless Card (+$52.00)
G. Battery: 8 Cell Smart Li-ion Battery
H. AC Adapter: AC Adapter with Power Cord.
I. Car Adapter: None.
J. Port Replicator: None.
K. Numeric Keypad: None.
L. 7-in-1 Memory Card Reader: Built-in 7-in-1 Memory Card Reader
M. Digital Video Camera: Integrated Digital Video Camera.
N. MS Windows OS: MS Windows XP Professional (+$145.00)
O. MS Office XP Software: None.
P. Carrying Case: Free Black business Carrying Case
Total on pctoque with 2 years extended warrenty with shipping costs and 1st year export warranty is $4423 which at todays exchange rate is: £2,406.26 GBP. Not sure how long these rates will last though.
I havn't configured a system on rockdirect yet, looks like are still working on that bit. You have to phone up for a quote or email.
Just for the sake of a direct comparison, I configured an 8790 on PCT with exactly the same config as the rockdirect top model (the 3.4 one) and it came to $2684 (£1463) + 'executive carry case' + software PCT doesnt sell, without the wireless or bluetooth or anything rockdirect doesnt mention, compared to £1699 on rockdirect. Considering shipping costs of ~£100 there's not much between them, PCT is a little better priced and has evidently good service so they'd be my choice, especially with the new international export coverage. Sager even sells a UK keyboard with it.
Rockdirect do have a good reputation for service from what I can gather. They do offer 3 years collect and return warrenty included in their prices. I'm going to wait and see what is available when they have the customise option available.
Also the rockdirect do have wi-fi and bluetooth as standard I think, come with OS. Here is the bits from rockdirect:
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor - Up to 3.4GHz 800FSB
-featuring Intel Speedstep and HyperThreading Technology
Microsoft Windows XP Home
Up to 1Gb DUAL CHANNEL DDR RAM
Up to 80Gb Ultra DMA Hard Disk Drive

17.0” WXGA TFT screen (1440*900)
256Mb ATi Radeon Mobility 9700 Graphics
802.11g Integrated Wireless Technology
5.1 DTS Sound Output
5 Speaker System including removeable Subwoofer
Sony Multi Format DVD Writer
Built-in Bluetooth Module & 7-in-1 Card Reader
Gigabit LAN & 56k Modem
Firewire / 3 x USB 2.0 ports / DVI port
Ability Office & Anti Virus Scan
Executive Carry Case
Dimensions: 393 x 280 x 42mm & 3.9Kg (Including Battery)
3 Year Collect & Return Warranty
They seem to have removable sub-woofer but no tv tuner option that I can see. And yes only upto 1gb which is a shame but is probably due to availability of So-DIMM parts I'd guess. But it's the same so you could always get the tuner and extra ram from elsewhere, probably pctorque maybe. But as you cannot configure a system yet it's worth waiting to see what options are available. It should be the same really.
Hi
are you really sure that it is the same as offered in the us and Can? in the specification it reads that the core logic is a SIS core and not an intel as offered in the US.
I was thinking of buying one through a german dealer, but now I fear that someone is merely upgrading a 470V with a M11 Graphicscard instead of offering the D870P. This could as well expain the missing options and limited RAM support.
Can anyone please destroy my fear?
I want to buy soon, but if I am only getting a tuned 470v for a premium price I might just forget it.
cheers ede
I think it's very likely the rock direct model is the 8790, it also says it supports RAID and dual channel ram which wasnt possible on the 4780. Also I cant see any good way they could upgrade the 4780's graphics as you describe.
The limited ram is probably an availability thing. When I got my 8890 512mb DDR 400 sodimms werent available in europe which is one of the reasons I ordered from america, but they became available soon after. 1gb sodimms are new to the US, give it a few more weeks and you should see rock and the like offering them too. Incidentally I dont see any mention of SiS, where did you see it?
Well spotted, and I cant explain that one other than to say it's probably wrong. The SiS M648FX / 963 chipset does not support dual channel nor does it support raid (have a look on the SiS product description) . It's the same one used in the 4780. So either they've got the chipset wrong and it's actually an 8790 equivalent, or they're making up the dual channel and raid claims. I'd be tempted to believe its the former, although I dont know how they've made that mistake.
I very nearly went for the plunge, but I realised about import duties. Does anybody know what these are for a laptop this size. I'm asuming VAT will be charged at 17.5% regardless.
