8790 in the UK! - Page 2

Right thanks. I did wander. Do they workout the vat on the current rates or do they have their own set exchange rate they work from? AT today's rates would cost me (presuming they charge vat on the shipping also) £292 in VAT for the model I've selected. This makes it more expensive to get from pctorque than from rockdirect. I've emailed rockdirect but I have had no response yet.

legion i would wait and see if rock give options like PCT do
like they are only putting in upto 1gb ram so that means 2 sticks which would
take up all ya ram slots..and if you ever want to go higher you will need
a matching pair of 400ghz ram..very costly

also rock dont let you upgrade ya laptop.....

You may be ableto get round the import duties by having PT mark it as a warranty repair return or similar. As for the spec differences on the RockDirect site, I would ignore them, RockDirect are not exactly experts, and this kind of mistake is not unique.

Yes it Does

Well I've taken the plunge with PCTorque. I'd prefer to buy abroad from a company with their reputation. Cost wise it's about the same. But will try and get PCT to do something with the labelling.

Shame there isn't a PAL-I version of the TV tuner (instead of NTSC). It's available on the 8890, but not on the 8790.
thats weird... even my 4780 has the option for format on the tuner... did you try calling them and asking for it? maybe they can get you a pal and just overlooked it as an option?

how much does it cost to get a laptop from pctorque to the uk then and wot about VAT ???
um not to be mean, but like if my country actually used the taxes for real stuff like yours did, I wouldn't try and dodge the fees.... Now mine heck the tax the crap out of us.. and they don't even give dental to veterans unless they are retired... I am so ready to revolt... all the crud we put up with... and we revolted over a lil tea tax not that long ago...

As an example, the shipping options and costs for my 8890 were as follows:

UPS Worldwide Express PlusSM
Total Rate(USD) $200.63

UPS Worldwide ExpressSM
Total Rate(USD) $160.63

UPS Worldwide ExpeditedSM
Total Rate(USD) $155.56

I went with ExpressSM and I got it the next day, that's the service I'd recommend.

VAT is then charged on the laptop and shipping at 17.5%, which you pay while the UPS guy is standing at your door. Like any other VAT, you can claim it back if it's a business expense.

It's costing $169 for 4 day shipping vat will be £200ish I reckon. It's meant for a gift for my brothers 21st, I've asked pctorque to gift wrap and mark as a gift but they aren't able to for legal reasons
post #34 of 45
I've heard about this no VAT on gifts thing, but I looked it up on the vat office website and the only mention I could find applies to items <£50, then again the website is a maze, so I might just have missed it. It doesnt surprise me about PCT not wanting to gift wrap for you though, if they were able to do that so many people would abuse it just to escape the VAT, even if your reasons are legitimate.
Yeah I know. I thought I'd ask them anyway. They'd have to lie about the value of the package to get over the VAT.

vat

i have the same problem of you legion.
I m in belgium so if i want to buy a sager 8790 i should pay 21% vat here in belgium.
I found one solution its to send the laptop to a girlfriend of me in canada and shes going to wrapp it like gift lolll.
For the moment i m still hesitating between the sager 8790 because the vat problem end the acer aspire 1714 its come much more cheaper for me i found one ine holland so i have no vat problem.
I m just thinking now wich i m going to buy.
If pc torque can decrease the value of the laptop its going to be great for you.
Let me now wich solution you found.

Rockdirect is friggin robbery! I just compared the prices of the 8790 at Rock and PcTorque. Both of the least customized systems are as follows

- Rock £1640
- PCT $2000 (approx £1000!!!!)

Nearly £700 more at Rock, damn stupid. I think im gonna email them about that...
The total for my laptop inc shipping came to $2880 I am about to transfer the money to PCT this morning, I've been quoted it will cost £1500 aprx. from my bank plus £20 fee. I'll let you know the final figure.

I have friends in the US I guess I could get the goods sent to first but then I think there may be state taxes involved, I'm not sure. For the £200 ish it'll cost me in VAT and knowing my friends there's no guarenteeing how quickly they'll send the package onto me. The only way it could be reduced was if PCT could somehow reduce the amount shown on the shipping labels so reducing the amount customs would charge me on, but this would be unfair to ask them and would probably invalidate the warranty or insurance when shipping.
It's costing me £1569 + £17 bank fee. Not bad really I think. Would be nice if this was put on the shipping. No doubt Customs and Excise will use a less favorable exchange rate to calculate their VAT. Also there is an admin charge by the shipping company which is esually excessive. But I think with all theseI am still getting a better deal than with Rockdirect. Also I was told by PCT that there is an extra weeks wait time for UK keyboards.
