Future Thinking... 8800go

Thread Starter
Okay, i just got me a M1710 and was wondering...

Will the DX10 8800 fit in an M1710? I assume nobody knows at this point in time, but is it even possible with the current M1710 mobo etc etc?

Highly doubted amongst the community, the basic problem is that #1 it'll be at least 6 months until a 8XXX card is probably going to be released. Also, since it will be much larger it wont most likely fit into the laptop, also wattage will be a big problem as well

If by some MIRICLE you coulr fit one in the laptop. (YEAH RIGHT) No way will you be able to power it!

I think the heat dissapation would be a bigger problem then it getting the power.

Perhaps they'll get a laptop design half as thick as the current one, but with an external video card dock housing a 8800. That would be cool (great battery life, enhanced portability and desktop calibre graphics at home), but also a compromise to those that want to be in the middle of some tundra and play WoW.

They could put the graphics card in the power brick, it's already big as hell anyway!!!! Then you could stick it under the table.

The solution is already at our finger tips.

1.) Laptop vendors need a STANDARD high bandwidth docking port, roughly equal to PCI-E 16x speed.
2.) Build a docking station with two PCI-E 16x slots and a 350w PSU.

Windows, Linux or MacOSX have no issues with multiple video cards in the system. Dock and pick the output cards you want to use.

That would be nice, but probably a hassle for some mobile gamers. I think an external GPU would be awesome.

The 8XXX cards are released next month, unless you're talking about the Go version, which I give 1-3 months more until release. You're all so worried about the power requirements of the 8800GTX, when in fact it's just a little more than a slightly overclocked X1900XT. Believe it or not, nVidia does have ways of reducing the power requirements for the Go version, and I wouldn't doubt that it's been worked on in conjunction with the desktop version.

I think it has quite a bit more changes than just clocks. While i agree they have ways of reducing power, i think it will still be too extreme with the current cooling solutions.

this is a very early question to be asked well no one knows the final specs of the card yet

plus i dont think that will be available in xps 1710 coz dell wil be more likely to make a new model, two card upgrades was far enough

Thats just not true. The power requirements for the first set of dx 10 cards are going to be much higher than they are now. I wouldn't be suprised if we didn't see a high end dx10 mobile card until summer.

Bummer. The 8800 benches posted here look stellar. Even if they made a low power go8800 that performed half as well it would still deliver a DX10 mobile part that matches the go7900gtx while still providing compatibility with upcoming games.

I'm kind of suprised that vendors are allowed to tout "Vista capable" laptops that lack gpu's that support vista's version of directx.

I think the Laptop version of a DX10 card will definitely come in the form of a new footprint requiring a new Motherboard to support it. thus a new line of laptops will be born.

Er, it is true, friend. A few of the major overclocking sites have a few 'premium' members who usually get access to new cards before hands. While they can't technically say they've got the cards (NDA), they can hint info about it. One of the major things they've said is that the power requirements are not nearly as bad as people are claiming.

I highly doubt the power will be the issue, but more so heat dissapation.

I will agree with that.

If power is not the issue, then heat won't be. You only get more heat when there is more power. If it uses the same wattage as the 7900 GTX, then it will produce the same amount of heat.
