hey there. I just started college and I was looking for a laptop. I was looking at dell, but I dont want to buy from them as everyone has a dell and they are more expensive then other companies. So i am pretty sure I want a HP Pavilion laptop. I want the middle verison, the 6000 but I am not sure on which to get, the intel or the amd. I am getting the fastest processor, the 2.0 ghz. Is the intel superior to the amd verison? I play some games like battlefield 2 and GTA:SA and counterstrike 1.6 but they really arent video or memory hungry anyways. i was planning on getting the 2.0 mb of ram and the geforce 7400 go. 12 cell battery and XP pro. its a hard decision as the intel isent much more then the amd and if the performance is worth the price, i should get it. THanks for any help.

dv6000t with Core Duo 2...

1st read thru this to get an idea what gpu (video card) you're going to need.

http://www.notebookforums.com/thread157799.html

2nd: Don't let the amount of installed ram be the deceiding factor... As that can be installed later, is usually cheaper, plus if you buy later you have the org dimms for "testing" purposes, etc.

3: The Core Duo 2 if you can get it is THE cpu to have...

4: The BEST place to buy , due to their 180-day (6-month) , NO Hassle, NO need to box it back up and ship it off and wait for your credit card to be credited back, Or have to fight with them about re-stocking fees... and have ALL your money returned back to you in minutes by just walking into any Costco store, is www.Costco.com

PS: You might want to check out the dv9000t.... might be pretty close on the $$$$$$

You buy CTO units (CTO=Custom to Order) from Costco via the internet... Unit ships directly form the HP factory in CHINA, and is delievered via FE-EX in about 7-10 days.. On the dv6, dv9 your call.... BTW: to get an idea on how big, etc, SAMS CLUB is carrying the dv9000z.... Circuit City has the dv6, and the dv9 ...(z) series machines.... Keep in mind on the Costco deal... you get a 180-day return window, vs only 21 days thru HP...

ok if I bought it from costco, I would get charged an extra non member surcharge of $74.50, which is lame. I would like the good turn around time but I dont have the extra cash for that. so hmmmm....

If your not a member of a certain club, why would you expect to get the same pricing as a member of that club? Becoming a member is something like $40/$50 +/- FYI: For me when I priced out each option, Costco was cheaper by a few dollars on each item... so even if you fiqure in a membership it's really a no-brainer.... and I think HP charges the FULL SALES tax, of whatever it is in your area.. and Costco charges, or fiqures it at a lower rate... Sales tax in my area is like 9%.... and on a $1,600 unit, my sales tax via Costco.com was less than $60.. which is less than 9%. Look at it this way.. for the membership charge your getting the "option" to be able at any time to return the unit for 180 days, getting all your money back.... (They will also refund your membership also, if you're unhappy with your membership) SamsClub, a divison of the Evil WallyMart Empire may be an option for you if your a member.... You may want to check out their offerings.... If you so choose. Of course if you're not a member, you're going to have to pay an upcharge there also... Go ahead and buy from HP, or whoever... most places only give you a 21 day return period. If you get a bad unit you will thank me for all the above, I promise you. I've had to call HP and talk with them and it wasn't a fun time dealing with them...

hmm ok, i figured it out. If I bought from Costco, I would be spending $114 more then I would be at HP total. Because of the Student discount at hp thats why its cheaper. But incase I get a defective laptop and it doesnt happen untill after that 21 day period... I can return it to costco within 6 months which is awsome. But does that mean if I break it? or if I dont like it? I am still deciding on wether or not to go with HP or costco. give me a situation of why I could return it to costco, convince me to buy it there. thanks. its kind of like im buying 6 months of a warranty for $114. But a full refund is in place if I do...

1: Did you fiqure in the tax, shipping, return, restocking fees, etc? 2: If you "break-it", no one is going to take it back. If something's wrong with it, Or you just plain don't like it, YES you can return it to Costco anything within 180 days. Please have enough character about you to not abuse that policy. 3: If you have a problem... Dealing with HP (or most any big company) is not the most pleasant expericance. The "home" divison seems to jerk people around on getting units fixed, swapped out... (Business division seems to "act" like a "business division", giving fast service... 4: You asked for a situation that would justify a return to Costco?.... Well hunt around on the boards for the "Keyboard problem" (which there is NO fix for that anyone can confirm).... Or ask persons with the dv2000 series about the display panel, which allot of people don't seem to be happy with these days. I bet allot of those people wished they would have bought from Costco. I'm glad I did as I returned the unit I had and got (within minutes) a full credit back on my credit card. Addtionally search for posts in which people have sent their unit in for "repair", and the nightmare that usually turns into. Buying a unit thru Costco gives you the "option" if HP has jerked you around to return the unit, get your money back.... with it placing an order for a "new-one", either be it a replacement model from the same company (HP in this case), or from another company , vendor. I'm telling you buying direct from HP if you get a unit with "problems" will make that $114 differance nothing. (You did add tax, etc? and fiqure in if your were to return the unit to HP any shipping , or restocking fees, right? Most vendors charge 15% restocking fee... One thing when returning a unit. Make SURE to state the reason your returning it is the unit has a problem, so Costco gets a credit back from the vendor. Just to let you know, if you return it just because you don't like the color, or some other BS reason (you don't like it), Costco takes a BIG loss on the transaction. In my area the Costco selling ALL the returns that nothing is wrong with (resaleable) off to a salvage company for 30-40 cents on the dollar. I believe they may get a full credit for something like 21 days from HP if you return a functioning unit that you "don't like"... and then after that they take a HUGE loss. One last thing... I don't work for Costco, I make no money off the deal.... If you want to buy from HP direct go ahead... 21-day return window

I see your point. I think I am going to be buying from costco as that 6 month return time is awsome. I calculated it, its exactly 7% tax from costco and from from hp, no discount on the tax so it doesnt really matter. Should I sign up to be a costco member or just do the non member fee? I wont be buying from costco any other time as I dont have any around here... Also, is the graphics card upgradable? I am going to be getting the geforce Go 7400. I think this card should be efficent to play CS 1.6, battlefield, GTA:SA and such. I dont play many hard core graphics games. Plus the highest settings doesnt bother me either. Also, do you know anything about the Brightview screen? Does this screen create to much glare? Also is the lightscribe worth the extra $ for it, does it lable well? Thanks.

I believe that the 6 month return window applies only to MEMBERS. Keep in mind that you may want to purchase say, another laptop at some point, and they do have other stuff online that you might need. Don't know where you live, but Fed-Ex , UPS delivers. Going the member route gives you the option of a Costco American Express card... Plus going the member route would be the thing to do, say if the laptop you buy turns out it does "have" a problem, has to be returned and you'd like to re-purchase another. If you paid the non-member fee, had to return, you might have to pay another non-member fee to re-purchase since each transaction would be considered "seperate". One thing on the "credit card", Some credit cards offer a FREE way to DOUBLE the existing mfg warranty.... Purchase with some credit cards and the mfg's orginal warranty is DOUBLED... (Don't think this applies to extended warranties, just the orginal in this case HP warranty, doubling it from 1 year to 2. Another thing on the warranty... Back in April-2006 no warranty options where showing thru Costco... I was the one that got them to add the warranty options you see at the bottom of the configuration pages... One option I think is still not showing is the 3? year accident coverage plan that HP offers.... So you may want to buy that plan from HP directly. (I was told by HP that you can purchase any plan from them directly) On the 7400, it's NOT upgradable. Dell is about the only mfg that has machines that you can "upgrade" . That being said I think that's only the 17 inch models, the 1705,1710... the M90, with the 1500, and the 2500 gpu (GPU=VIDEO CARD). The reason you can "upgrade" say a 1705 (the economy model) to the 1710 (The top of the line "gaming model") is they use the SAME motherboard..... and the GPU's are a SEPERATE PART that can be "replaced". The only cavet to this is you have to intially order the machine with other than the "base" GPU which IS intergrated into the motherboard (like the HP's).... If you order a 1705 with the base GPU, you will not be able to later install the 7900GS, , 7900GTX.. (unless you buy a new motherboard) Note that a 1705 with the 7900GS gpu, really is a very nice gpu...It's about TWICE as fast as the 7600 used in the HP's, and THREE times as fast as the 7400.... Addtionally the 7900GS will "overclock" well giving 3Dmarks that are about 3 times more than the 3Dmarks a 7600 will do, and 4 times more than a 7400, as used in the dv6000t. GPU INFO: (It's the "Sticky" at the TOP of the page) http://www.notebookforums.com/forum96.html http://www.notebookforums.com/thread157799.html On the "settings".... when playing a "game", having a machine that will run at the highest resolutions will improve your gameplay, as you can "see" someone, something way off that is a threat, since there is more detail. On glossy screens... they give more glare, but they make blacks, and the colors "richer" "Brightview" is just a marketing term I believe HP uses for machines that have the "glossy" screen "Brightview" comes in two flavors... the "Brightview" with a SINGLE LAMP at the bottom of the screen... and the ULTRA- "Brightview" which has an addtional lamp at the TOP of the screen. The second lamp making the screen "brighter", and making it more evenly lit. Lightscribe= Takes a special disc (read that as more expensive).. Great if you need it and can afford the discs. Note that the unit will burn "regular" DVD's, Cd's , Special discs are needed to use the "label" feature.

You asked for examples of why you should buy from COSTCO ????

Look around on the boards and you will find many people who have had problems. Problems with the machine itself, and or problems dealing with HP.

Here's a couple of examples of WHY you should buy from COSTCO:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=83786

And another:

DV8000 dv5000 Series - Keyboard problems
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=57325

Note that Buying thru Costco gives you a 180 day, NO Hassle, No need to box it back up , ship it off and wait, fight to get the charged-back credited back to your credit card, Or fight over re-stocking fees, etc type refund...

Take it back to ANY Costco store, and you get ALL your money back, on the spot in minutes. ...

Just a FYI people, when returning to COSTO, make SURE to STATE there IS a PROBLEM with the unit so Costco gets a full credit back from HP.

BTW: If you "use" it for 6 months and "return" it... and there's nothing "wrong" with it, it's marked re-saleable... and it's sold off to a SALVAGE company for like 30 cents on the dollar which means Costco is taking a HUGE loss on each unit returned.... (at least in my area.)...

(I think Costco gets their money back on an item that nothing's wrong with ONLY for like 21 -30? days past the org sale date... after that point Costco takes the loss... if the item is "re-saleable".)

Some Costco's "may" sell items that are re-saleable" in a special mark down section, but don't expect to find one at 30% of the orginal selling price as the SALVAGE company gets that price because they take ALL their returns, the good, bad, and the ugly so to speak.

Thats nice! I was about to order the DV6000t but I went to bestbuy and compared the dv6000t and the dv9000t. I really liked the 9000t because it has the Nvidia GO 7600 and 17 inch screen those are the main reasons for me wanting the dv9000t over the dv6000t. When you get it, tell me how you like it and if its worth it. I am going to be buying from HP probably also. I will probably be getting it from HP as I get student discount and and I dont have a membership at costco or I would probably get it from them.

In the above post you're now saying you're going to buy direct from HP after all the info I gave you?

Good luck on that if you get a unit that's defective in some way, has problems ... Hope you have allot of time on your hands.

Ok well, I just relized I dont have the extra cash for the DV9000t so I am going to limit it down to the DV6000t or the DV6000z, My friend whos a computer guru says the AMD is a better processor and it runs cooler then the HP Centrino Core 2 Duo. I always used AMD in my desktop computers and never had a problem and they always ran cool. Ive never had a laptop before so this could be completely different. I have seen alot about those issues with the keyboards and such, so if I do decide to get the HP soon I will definitly get it from costco. The reason I was going to get the 9000t from HP is because it was a bit cheaper and I couldent afford that. But now that the 9000t will be about my budget I can afford to get it from costco. I figure I will just become a member there and pay my 50 bux for this year, and at the end of my first year I will decide to keep the membership or dump it. I really wish we had a costco store around here, but unfortunatly we dont. What I like about the 6000z is that its cheaper, but the video card in it is slower then the 6000t. How does the 6000z's GO 7200 video card compare to the 6000t's GO 7400? I only play games that are fairly old, like Counter strike 1.6 and Starcraft, and Grand theft auto San Andreas. If I want to play better games I can just use my desktop computer. I would like to play those games however on a decent settings, Not the highest best quality settings. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate you taking time to help me out here.

kdubbz,

The Intel Core Duo 2 is THE chip to get in a laptop...
You can Google for info if you wish, but in every benchmark the Core Cuo 2 smokes AMD's offering's (really) and is very energy efficient doing so.

On the GPU, I'd go for the fastest one that you can afford...

Here's some info on GPU's.

Notebook Video Graphics Card Guide 2006
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread178265.html

Mobile Graphics Comparison Chart
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread157799.html

Based upon what you said I'd spec one out like this. You can play around with the CPU options, 1.83 is as low as I'd go... on the RAM, it's $179 for the 512 to 2 gig upgrade, so it's about the SAME amount of money to buy ram after the fact....www.newegg.com and you get to KEEP those (2) 256mb chips... Which come on handy for "testing" purposes later on.

Buy the unit, make sure to "burn-it-in" with Prime95, Heayload, etc for about a week or so to make sure you got a "good" one, then order the RAM...

OK I have decided to go with the DV6000t with all the goodies you have in the package above, also with just the 512 MB memory. I plan on getting the 2 GB of memory after, but what Kind is the ram? What speed will the laptop accept and what type? Pin number and such. Thanks. I Am Going to sign up to costco tonight and wait the 2 days to get my account number so I can buy my laptop from them. Thanks again!

Hope you get a good one

When you get it run some burn-in apps
Prime95, etc... Dead Pixel Buddy to test for dead pixels (google for link)

On the RAM, I'd snag a copy of CPU-Z, it will tell what is in it currently.... Another option is to pull the ram cover OFF, and write down the id strings on the ram, then Google for info...

I got my laptop today! This thing is awsome. Its so fast. One thing though, I got a Samsung SEC desplay. Ive heard bad things about this display, but so far it looks good. The battery life of the 12 cell is really good. I ran heavyload and i will run it for a hour or two for a week. i dont feel the need to reformat this because there really isent that much bloatware, and I removed the bulk of it easily. I just have to order the ram a little later. I actually found with the 12 cell battery, it sits nice on my lap. its comfortable. My friend has a Dell Inspirion 6000 and he loves my laptop and wants an HP now. Im just not sure on the SEC display so far.. as i havent seen it with a brightly lit room or daylight yet.
