Help me choose a desktop

Thread Starter
Hi, I've connected my i6400 ATI X1400 to my SHARP 42" AQUOS LCD HDTV with a s-cable and extend the view, but everything came out quite small.

I was thinking of placing a desktop beside my TV, and use the tv as a monitor, but i don't want it to turn out how small it looks with my x1400 outputing. So what is the best solution?

I was thinking of getting a NVIDIA 7900 GT to output to the TV with HDMI, will it still turn out too small or what? I'm open to any suggestions. THX.

changing DPI on the video card settings, and lowering the res will give you big letters from a distance, unsure if youd actlly need to change the res

The resolution on 95% of LCD's is only 720P, so pretty much any video card can handle that low of a resolution. It's probably not gonna look so hot though, unless you're quite a ways away from it. The new 1080P LCD's will look much better, but they're way too expensive for my wallet..

The thing is just that everything looks very small on the tv as my monitor. Will the g78/79 solve such problem?
get a 79-XX card or an X19-XX card

I've heard the 79 operates slightly better than the x19, true?
drivers are definitely better..

still trying to figure out how a large resolution on a large screen could look small though.. how far are you from the TV when you're looking at it?? I can easily see things on my 26" LCD from about 8-10 feet away..

I guess i'm about 8-10 ft away too, but i was difficult for me to see. However i was outputing with a x1400 256mb with a SCABLE. I probably see dramatic differences with g79 or x1900 right?

No. What resolution are you running, most 42" LCD have a native resoltuoon of 1366x768 or 1280x720. you shouldn't have any problem reading things at that res at a distance up to 7-10 feet. Getting a new vidoecard will not make any difference. Moving to 120dpi fonts will probably make more of a difference.

The 120dpi didn't help, i'm running 1280x720/800 (both same results)

the fonts are still very very small.

Have you been to the optometrist lately? serious question.. It really shouldn't be hard to read that resolution from that distance..
When you said SCABLE, did you mean S-VHS cable? That's not the ideal output for a nice LCD TV like you have. Will your current video card do DVI? That would probably sharpen things up and make them more easily read. If you happen to have cable tv, ask your cable company if they'll give you one. I use Time Warner cable here and they give me any cable I need, including optical, DVI and HDMI, free.
