CD\DVD Rom issue

I'm having a lock up problem with my cd\dvd rom which is obviously making loading programs and drivers an issue. It locks up to the point of having to do a hard shut down every time a cd is inserted into the drive. It will spin for about 5 secs and stop and then the OS locks up.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any tips or advice? It is a Sager 8890 running Windows XP with service packs. Is there possibly a driver I can reinstall for this cd\dvd rom? This is becoming very frustrating....

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I am having the same problems. About 3/4 of the CD's I put in my machine they spin up then the machine hard locks. Seems to happen with CD-r's more often than CD's

I'm searhcing for a fix right now (how I found your post). I'll let you know if I find anything. If anyone else knows a fix please let us know.

btw I have a 8890 w/ XP w/ all current updates as well

I think I found a solution....I HOPE!!!

I went into the device manager and uninstalled the DVD drive. Then rebooted the machine.

Log back in as the admin and XP will reinstall the driver and come up with a message new hardware is installed and ready to use. After that I have tried a few CD's and it seems to be working. I'll post again if it locks up.

Yeah, I should have posted a reply to this. I got so frustrated with it, I bagged the install and wiped everything and started again. No problems so far. I suppose I could have tried your solution as well, but I wanted to make sure I got the driver install order correct.

Hi, I got more problems. I got my 8890 two week ago with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K12RA drive, I can't read/write most CD-R,CD-RW and even some of commercial VCD. I tried to reinstall the driver with no success at all. I decide to swap with another new one, but I don't know whether this drive has a genetic limitation to read/wirte these disks or not. Any hint? Thank you.

Hey mini sorry for the late replay. It sounds like you may have a bad drive or if your not the admin, that may be causing issues.

I just wanted to drop a line saying my problem is still happening. Locked up again today.

i have been having the same problems with my cd/dvd drive. inserting a disk freezes the pc, however taking out the disk stops the freeze. i have decided to wait to install sp1 for xp and/or sp4 for 2000 before i get bothered with it. i believe it is the driver that comes with the operating system, and the fix is in the sp's. thus, needing a reinstall post ServicePack addition. please let me know if my thoughts are correct. thanks.

I've had similar problems with my dvd-+r drive, it periodically locks up when I put a disk in the drive.
I wonder if one of the windows updates is causing this?

Hey quick update on this. I emailed Sager about it and they said they have found out "nero easy packet reader software" can cause this issue.

I don't have that installed so in my case that was not the problem. I recently turned off "autorun" (I don't like autorun anyways) and it has stopped locking up. I even sat here testing it for about an hour putting in about every kind of CD/DVD I had close to me.
