Dell 8600 or Gateway m505?

Hey guys I am considering buying another m505x or a 8600 since dell is offering such good prices with DVDR for this notebook... how is the speakers on the 8600? the m505x has a built in subwoofer and is by far one of the best speakers i have ever heard... I was considering the new Powerbook 1.25 ghz but the speakers are terrible and really not worth the extra bucks unless u are looking for just all looks.

Any ideas? thanks

I consider the 505's speakers terrible if sound is your priority find some old toshibas

I am wondering the same thing - im caught between the m505 and the 8600. I am just not sure. I may end up going with a sager and just buy a bunch of batteries. I read such great things about the 8600 and the m505 on the forums, but outside the forum everyone says to avoid both companies. So I dont know what to do.

Honestly for Sound related performance and quality you want the older Toshiba's besides that your looking at slim options. if you want volume in general the 8600's speakers are louder than the 505 but equal quality

What about overall quality between the 2, what would you say is built better?

I really dont care much about the sound realy, im just inm a toss up between these 2 pcs and I cant decide which would be better,

I use these applications exclusively:

fireworks mx
flash mx
dreamweaver mx
front page 2002
photoshop cs for web and digital photography.
cubase vst 5

Im also looking for linux compatibility - if I need to do alot of tuning to get it to work i dont mind.

and i do like playing games like c&c generals, and call of duty, id like to get into other games as well imjust wondering if the 64mb card would be good enough in the 505x.

Im a little scred of getting a dell because I deal with there tech support almost opn a daily basis and I HATE the people I talk to, Itypically dont nuse tech support, but when I do i like it to be a good experience.

what would you reccommend for the work that I do? The only thing leading me to dell is the centrino with 128mb vram - is the extra ram really worth it?

Thanks

By surfing the forums you will see countless (yes countless) issues with build quality of the 8600. Sorry Dell, the 8500 and 8600 case is not great. Although I have only worked with friends, I have not owned one. The build quality of the m505 is great although it is no Toughbook. For sound, my personal side by side had the m505 hands down. It is not a Bose home theater but sounds great for notebook. Both companies have varied/BAD product support but I have had experience with both and if you have the staying power you will get what you want. Good luck!

I think i am going to stick with the M505x its a great buy! Of course i would buy an alienware area 51 or powerbook but at this time this is all i want to spend and the m505 has all i need for a great price!

Not being a Bose home theater is a good thing. Bose blows. Overpriced crap.

Besides the Gateway m505x is the only laptop i can think of that has the mp3 player /cd player option in which u can play music with the machine turned off : )

does anyone have a comment on the video card?

V card on the m505 has not disappointed me yet. With the native resolution, 64 is great for all games currently on the market (I qualify this only in the games I have played on my machine including a number of DX9 games). An 8600 with higher resolution may find a 64 meg card a bit low when trying to play them in those resolutions. Don't get me wrong, if the m505 was offered with a 128 card I would have jumped on it.

I guess the gateway is the way to go. I just really hope I dont get a lemon because gateways service is horrible. Even there esales people are horrible.
