Have you heard any signs as to when Dell is going to introduce 17" notebooks? Almost every other manufacturer has one.

17" is almost too big, and you cant even get them in a WUXGA.

I dont believe 17" is too big. I had borrowed HP 7188cl from a friend. And extra viewing area allowed me to perform my job (software engg) much better. It was great for watching DVDs too.

I think this brings up a good point that I always like to think about...when is a notebook no longer a notebook? Sure bigger is better...but by this time next year will "notebooks" have a 21" LCD screen? C'mon now...manufacturers need to think outside of the box! Will the laptop --> notebook change now be notebook --> desknote?

hahah 21" haha I gotta get me one of those, I think the biggest will be a 19 if you ask me, anything else would be WAY too heavy and waht not. Might as well buy a shuttle pc

19" on a notebook..christ lol...I would think the next thing with notebook LCDs would be the same they are doing with regular LCD screens...making them TV and HDTV ready..

I believe anything more than 17" will be some sort of folded display. Something of style /--\ with main screen being 15.4" or 17" and side screens being half of that. Excellent for IM while you are gaming or for viewing mutliple screens while developing.

Yeah, im sure the 17" widescreen is nice but like Element said there has to be a line where a notebook becomes a desktop. I happen to think the 15.4 is perfect, not too big, not too small. I have a few co-workers that have 11 and 12 inch screens and they look tiny, guess its all up to personal preference and what your going to be doing with your laptop, if its just going to sit on your desk and you never move it then the bigger the better I say, just as long as you can afford it.

ooooooooh I just had a brainstorm...maybe future notebooks won't even have a LCD monitor! They might just have a internal DLP projector...that would be the bomb son!

as far as 19-21in + screens.. i am trying to make my own type of new screen for one of my project laptops .. a steady liquid projector on the back that faces the wall.. right now im just having problems with it stretching at certain distances from the wall.. everyone has seen a projector before.. same concept.. but instead of pointing at a flat surface.. it points UP the height of the wall without skewing the view... I dont see laptops getting much bigger than 19-21in because thats just rediculous... id rather see my laptop in production.. you could have anywhere from 3in - 600in screen depending on how far you are away from the wall and the hieght of it..

For some reason I always have felt and still feel to this day that Apple has the best 17" LCD on a notebook...weird lol

Notebook with two displays. It seems to have already started
check this out http://desidost.blogspot.com/2004_03...78654008225047

As far as definition goes, laptops > notebooks > desknotes > mobile PCs > Desktops would be the progression, if you count weight alone.
Ideally I would like a laptop that weighs less than 4lbs with 17" hi-res display, 2GB RDRAM, 100Gb 10k RPM HDD, TV-tuner and all the goodies. Also everything should be swappable/upgradeable including the processor.
