Starting to look

Well, I've had my 5660 since it was 'the hot new thing' and the cracking hinge problem is so bad now that I will have to do the metal hinge plate reinforcement (ordered the parts and printed the instructions and will probably fix it next weekend.) Already had to take it all apart to get to the hinges, loosen them slightly and epoxy the lid top and bottom half. At the moment it is holding sorta, and I am using it now. But I keep thinking of getting a new laptop and am again looking at Sager. Specifically a maxed out 5760. But I guess I am worried about the build quality of the case. As I wait for the Nforce 7950 to become available, I thought I would ask if anyone here has heard of any Sagers other than the 56xx series with problems like the case cracking around the hinge. Was this just a 5600 series issue? I must say, other than that problem this laptop has been great and that is why I am again considering Sager. But I would hate to go through the case issue again.

there's a post about the cracking lcd bezel here
http://www.notebookforums.com/post2403761.html
and a thread here:
http://www.notebookforums.com/thread6795.html

I'm am currently typing to you on a 5660, and haven't had any cracking on LCD area (luckily). I think it's because when I first got it, I loosened up a few screws on the front of the LCD to improve the lighting it (old thread about the issue here). But I did get the extreme heat issue (desktop processor is the culprit I assume). I got my mobo and heat sink replaced before sager warranty was up. I wonder how much pain i'd be in if i had micro medics do it...

I haven't read anything bad about the 5760's case, but they've only been out for so long, unlike the 5660.

Also the 7950gtx is just a 7900gtx with higher clock speeds, if you o/c the 7900gtx you'll get roughly the same preformance. I haven't read anything about anyone trying to o/c the 7950gtx though. It's a general consensus that the extra ~100 you spend from going to 7900 to 7950 isn't worth it.

Regarding general Sager build quality: I own an 8790 that's over two years old, and have no damaged hinges, or case cracking whatsoever. It is my main computer so is handled frequently. The outer case is plastic, but this thing is solid. I plan on being a repeat customer of Sager, primarily for their value vs. build quality ratio.

Don't mean to hijack you thread but my 5660's hinge broke. Where did you get your hinge kit etc.

Lois,

Is your Sager under warranty? If so, I'd send it back for an case replacement..

Given the age of the 5660 series, I doubt it's still under warranty

And Louis, I actually had small cracks in my case on my 8790. However, that was attributable to me putting it in the carrying case "head-first" and grabbing it near the hinge areas when I pulled it out. Didn't think anything of it until I heard a small noise and that's when I noticed I had small cracks there So no, it's not just the 5660 series, but IIRC, the 56xx series had series hinge crack issues.

Correct, no warranty.

I did however use the Sager email address I found on this forum to ask Sager about it. They answered in minutes and gave me an approximate cost to repair. What a pleasure instead of playing phone tag.

$80 labor
$35 back of cover
$15 bezel
?? shipping

So for under $150 probably. I bough hinge on eBay for $25 but think I will resell and have Sager do it. These 56xx are terrific notebooks. I have a 5620 that just will not quit. I want to upgrade for better video but the thing is so reliable it keeps me from it. The 5660 is my son's I bought used on eBay and is flawless also ... except for the hinge.

Techsupport@sagernotebook.com Here is the address if anyone needs.
