What's leakage?

I've read many posts on this board about leakage problems with the Inspiron 8600 screen. Can someone please clear me up on what this is? I have a Samsung screen, with one dead pixel. My son wants to return it and have them send us abother screen but their emails just keep telling us that less than 5 is standard and regular. It's almost in the middle of the screen too. And also, how can I test to see if I have a leakage problem?

I can't tell you what "leakage" is because I don't have experience with such a phenomenon but I can tell you that yes each manufacturer has a certain yield when it comes to LCD dead/burnt out pixel policies. A company such as Best Buy has a great service plan when it comes to such things...replacing the LCD for just one (1) pixel problem whereas Dell will only honor a replacement (and keep in mind you would be getting a REFURBISHED screen not a retail/oem one) when x amount of pixels are dead/burnt out. It would appear from their e-mail that you won't be getting a refurbished replacement screen until you have more than 5 pixels out...

However, they don't actually see your screen do they? You can say that you have 5 pixels so they send you out a new one. Then, if that one is no better, you can send it back and keep the original one, can't you?

Three problems with that:

1. It's unethical (Not that I wouldn't do it necessarily I'm just saying lol)
2. I don't believe they just send LCD replacements. They do it in person via an in-home technician
3. Even if they did send it, I would assume you would have to immediately if not beforehand send the "defective" part into them...
4. In my opinion a screen with 1 pixel out is better than the refurbished one you would get in replacement...prepare for finger smudges and possibly even more burnt out pixels lmao

If you push the issue, they will send out replacement parts such as LCD's for you to replace yourself. I've done this twice and had better results requesting support via e-mail over Dell's phone support.

Have the screens that they've sent you been better than yours was originally?

Yes. I replaced the LCD on a C810 and a I8100 just before their corresponding warranty was due to expire. With the refurbished LCD, Dell includes the Airborn Express labels in order to ship the old parts back to them.

XPS Light at Bottom of Screen

Hello,

I just got a new XPS last night, and it seems as though when i am in like a DOS screen, or an all black screen, there is alot of light coming from the bottom of the screen. Is this normal? Should i return it for a new one? Thanks in advance for any advice, shiz.

8600 Light at bottom

Greets,

I have just recieved an 8600 uxga (Samsung) and noticed a glow at the bottom as well.... for kicks I looked at my friends Toshiba Satellite (lower res screen.. maybe xga) and no glow.... the glow is maybe 1/2" high in some spots...

I have the same question... how normal is this?

Thoughts appreciated.

Thanks.

Interesting discussion...
Question is are there any good notebooks with excellent lcd displays?
How long do these displays typical perform? ( in order to get appropriate warranty)

Yep,

That's what I got.. that 'glow' on the bottom. There is actually a little distortion in the glow above what appears to be screw caps that cover screws on the bottom of the screen.

No bad pixels on the screen... other than the glow it looks great. My worry is I get another screen and its not any better or has bad pixels.... is Samsung worse / better than other brands? I always thought it was the SXGA screens that had the problems.

Thanks again for the reply.

Ok, I most definitely have that. I just rebooted my computer and put in a DVD and I saw it in both instances. I just sent an email to suppport again telling them about this problem and I hope they send me a new screen soon.
