Small laptop with powerfull gpu....Is there such a thing?

My first post in this forum. Hello everybody.

I've been considering buying a Dell XPS M1710, but now I am having second thoughts.

My "ideal" laptop is a "dual" laptop. Fast processor, 2 gb fast memory, and powerfull graphics processor with enough memory - like 7900GTX with 512 MB - which would give me the gaming capability...BUT...with 14 inch screen.

14" means good for travelling/working, and for gaming I would use a 17 external monitor.

XPS M1710 with 14" , or something like that, would be ideal.

I've been looking, but haven't found it. Do you know if such animal exists?

The only place you are going to find a graphics card like the one you are describing will only come in a 17" flavor as the smaller laptops are more for portability and long battery life (which you won't get with a behemoth video card). Plus there are the size and ventilation restrictions in a smaller lapotop which is another factor for not finding an upscale graphics card in a smaller laptop. Hope this helps.

The most powerful card in a 14 inch laptop is the x1600 in the asus w3j. But it comes at a premium of upwards of $1800+ for a setup like the one u mentioned.

And how would that card perform?

I am not a heavy gamer. .. just occasionally..... BUT...I want a good performer. I am not talking about paying to get 5 or 10 fps more, but I hate when the game lags, freezes or jumps.

I recently came across the ASUS A8JS, which has a 14.1 screen with a GeForce Go 7700 with 512mb dedicated graphics ram. This laptop costs about $1500 loaded with close to what you want. Hope this helps!

Yes the ASUS A8Js just came out and it is $1599. If this is in your price range (a 1710 seemed to be so you probably can afford it) then I would say buy that. It is the best you are going to do. But ASUS has a lot of other good models that can be had for a little cheaper. If you want a good 14" gamer that is probably the best looking notebook every made then follow the advice above and check out the W3J.

Only good gaming cards you will find in a 14"-->Nvidia 7600/7700 (I believe the 7600 only has 8 pixel pipelines and the 7700 has 12) and the ATI x1600 (12 pixel pipelines) Either one will probably quench your gaming thirst. (Unless you want to play Oblivion on totally maxed out settings.)

they do very poorly since the highest gpu avail is x1600 which is pretty poor in performance. but many people here tend to think its a very good card but just buy it and see.

and if you want to play new games its just not enough power. 7900gs isnt even enough power

Dont listen to Anitz. He has this weird idea that you cant play a game unless you're getting a bajillion FPS (I mean come on, the 7900gs isnt enough?!?!). The x1600 is very powerful. It may not be the best thing on the market, but its pretty powerful. The x1600 will handle all games out on highish settings and you'll still get decent performance. Within the realm of 30 FPS or higher depending on the game.

What 'good performance' means is really subjective to the user. Some people think an x1300 is more than they need for games-- it just depends on what kind of settings you can stand or care to play on, and what kind of frame rate you consider tolerable.

Agree. In my perticular case, being a casual gamer, I don't care about settings. All I want is smooth, continuous operation. I do not want lags / freezes. I know some games demand a super gpu for such smooth operation but I don`t care about those games. With the above in mind, can I assume that the gpu's mentioned here (7600/7700, 1600) are the minimum I should look at that more or less guarantee my required performance? Can you guys (and gals) confirm this? By the way, what about the 7400?

Your assumption is right 7600/7700, 1600 is probably the minumum you should be looking at. I'd go with the Asus A8Js it's a killer machine with the 512MB 7700.

Television plays at 30 FPS. I assume you all find television acceptable and non-laggy.

I have an x1600 pro in a new desktop and it performs awesome. The lowest FPS I get on a game is Oblivion which never really drops below about 32 FPS on highish graphics. Fear plays at about 40-45 on high settings. I havent tested Battlefield yet but if my x700 laptop plays it at 40 FPS on medium-highish I'm sure that the x1600 will play it better than that.

I play BF2 for 3-5 hrs per day on my x1600 and get 30-50 fps. Settings are almost all on high at native res of 1680x1050. Thats plenty for MOST people. I got the Z96J and use it for gaming and 3d modeling. Love the computer and its portability with the 15.4" screen.

Please, let's not start another thread where Aintz argues that people are not allowed under any circumstances to play games at anything under a constant 100fps at any resolution under 1900*1200 without full AA and AF and HDR (where it applies).

aintz, I do not know much about this things. Will 30 fps give me a smooth, freezing-free, lag-free performance?
