a good budget gfx card?

best buy is having a sale on this card this week, only $50. how much better than my current card is it? i am currently running a ati radeon 9700 pro 128 meg. not sure if i can post the link to it, but the sale card is a ATI RADEON 9250 256MB DDR PCI. mainly i just want it to run a widescreen which i will be getting soon, and play a few games i have (source, empire earth 2) nothing major.

9700 pro is better than 256mb of any ati card below the 9700 series


sell your 9700 pro for 40 bucks, take the 50, then go to www.newegg.com and buy a better card or somthing

really?? maybe i should have mentioned that the 9700pro i have is in the area of 5 years old. does that make a difference? i am decent with computers, but the difference in prices and workings of gfx cards still boggles me.

get a PNY 6600 on newegg for like 43$, thats what my friend got for his emachine T6412

PNY GeForce 6600 256MB - 50 bucks

but maybe if you can stretch it this would be better (I dont really know cards so maybe this is actualy worse)

You mentioned wide screen and I'm fairly certain a 6600 won't do wide screen resolution. If I remember right, the 6800 was the lowest card that would support that resolution..
Might want to wait until the 8800's come out before buying a new card. That should make the 6 and 7 series cards drop at least a few $

the 8800's come in agp flavor? dam nvidia aint giveing that up for nothing eh

I don't know if the 8800 will come in AGP, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. I still see PCI video cards every now and then and that was seriously old school..

i'm looking for a card better than my current 4 yr old 9700pro that runs widescreen. that is basically it. i need the new screen cause my 14 month-old benq died.

what i was getting at is there is NO pci-e 9700 pro and thats what hes upgrading from, he didnt say anything about having pci-e

and you told him to wait till the 8800's

Will you PLEASE learn how to read??? I said wait for the 8800's so the price of the 6 and 7 series will go down. Your trolling needs to be stopped..
and every freaking series has a low end to it, then you don't have to worry about meeting your spec's.. it'll be a budget freaking card. Believe it or not there is something below the 7950 in the 7 series and the 6800 Ultra wasn't the only 6 series card..

both you guys need to chill and I would recomend the 6600 (since I have one), I don't know what resolution you want to run but I run at 1440x900 and it does fine. It does what I need it to which is play America's Army with constant 60fps.
Though if I did it again I would have just spent the extra 40-50 bucks and got a Nvidia 6800 or ATI 800 or whatever their best AGP card is.

nods, 6600gt would be even better, good buget card, i agree, x850pros are pretty cheap too, 100 or so bucks
