I was reading Engadget today only to discover that Gateway is now on Sony's battery recall list. The affected models are the CX200, CX210, E100M, M250, M255, M280, M285, M465, M685, MP8708, NX260, NX510, NX560, NX860, NX100, MX1025, MX6918b, and MX1020j. It applies to laptops manufactured between September 2005 through October 2006, so basically any of those models made in the last year. Gateway has a battery recall page where you can check your battery to see if it is on the recall list and then order another one if it is.
My brand new NX260X is on the list. I filled out the form and it said that "Gateway will process the request within 24 to 48 hours. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery." It also said that I will receive a tracking number via email and that they will provide return shipping materials for the old battery to be sent back. If your battery is on the recall list, the FAQ recommends draining the battery and only using your laptop on A/C power after that.
Kind of a bummer but Gateway seems to be handling it well, especially considering that it isn't even their fault the batteries are faulty. I hope mine doesn't explode; I use it for work, school, and personal use. It is my primary machine and it gets used all day, every day of the work week. Who knows, maybe they'll give me a free NX860 if mine goes boom
Anyone else on the list too?
