MBP Intel Core 2 Duo Announced

Thread Starter
They're finally here with a few new goodies as well!

1GB DDR2 Mem is now standard. Also now expandable to 3GB total.
A FW800
And 120GB HD is now standard as well. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that the 15" has any 7200rpm options.

All new MacBook Pro models now offer double the memory and greater storage capacity than the previous generation, as well as a FireWire 800 port for connecting to high-speed peripherals.

The new MacBook Pro's lightweight, aluminum enclosure is just one-inch thin, available in 15- and 17-inch models, and features a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing on-the-go.

"With an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, greater storage capacity and FireWire 800 connectivity, the new MacBook Pro delivers unprecedented performance and mobility in an incredibly thin and light design," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "We are thrilled that our notebook sales are growing twice as fast as the overall notebook market, and we hope these new MacBook Pro models continue that success."

The MacBook Pros' Intel Core 2 Duo processor offers 4MB of shared L2 cache, which is up to 39 percent faster than the previous 2.16 GHz MacBook Pro and more than seven times faster than the 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 running industry standard benchmarks, Apple said. Additionally, it has enhanced Mac OS X to take advantage of the technology advances from Intel's Core 2 Duo processors, resulting in increased performance in professional applications like Aperture 1.5, Final Cut Pro 5 and Logic Pro 7.

An ideal fit for business and creative professionals, MacBook Pro delivers advanced performance including 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory expandable up to 3GB, ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics with up to 256MB of dedicated GDDR3 graphics memory, and a double-layer SuperDrive for burning professional-quality DVDs.

Every new MacBook Pro also includes built-in 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), a FireWire 800 and a FireWire 400 port, combination analog and optical digital audio input and output ports, an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot, and a DVI video output to connect up to a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display.

Like their predecessors, the new Intel-based notebooks come with Apple's MagSafe Power Adapter that magnetically couples the power cord to the MacBook Pro and safely disconnects when there is strain on the power cord, preventing the notebook from falling off its work surface. Additionally, Apple now offers a new MagSafe Airline Adapter that makes using the MacBook Pro on an airplane even more convenient by connecting to in-seat power ports for continued productivity throughout the duration of a flight.

Other standard features of the new notebook line include an illuminated keyboard, Apple's Sudden Motion Sensor that is designed to protect the hard drive in case of a fall, and a Scrolling TrackPad to easily scroll through long web pages or pan across large photographs.

Each model comes with iLife '06, the next generation of Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications featuring iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, GarageBand and iWeb, the latest iLife application that makes it super-easy to create amazing websites with photos, blogs and podcasts and publish them on .Mac for viewing by anyone on the Internet with just a single click.

Every MacBook Pro also comes with the latest release of the world's most advanced operating system, Mac OS X version 10.4.8 Tiger including Safari, Mail, iCal, iChat AV, Front Row and Photo Booth, running natively on the Intel-based notebook.

Same great look but I cant wait for reviews to see if heat issues were addressed since the problems are due towards design than the chips.

Anyway, i just got a MacBook 10 days ago so this justifies my purchase. No MB upgrade (yet) so i feel better about buying so late in the cycle.
Sweet, seems like a worthy upgrade.
wish theyd give the MB a little kick as well.

ill be buying another in JAN. would like a little more for the money.

glad they went with the c2d in just the mbp though. also now have a dl 6x superdrive, i want that.

I'm happy that they finally releaesed the core 2 duo.

But I too will wait for some reviews to see if they were able to resolve some of the issues with the original MBP.

Sad that they didn't give the 15" a 7200 RPM drive option. They should have upgraded the Video Card in the 17" as well. 7600 or 7700 would have been nice.

True, but they did give it FW800 making it worth a look for me finally.

im surprised at the amount of people that care about fw800. seems like that never really took off a whole lot.
It is us multimedia people that care about it actually, as we do use it either for external storage or interfaces. External Storage might be helped with eSATA, then again you gotta have a port for that just the same, which the MBP didn't have.

I love FW800 myself.

I wouldn't worry about heat. The MBP hasn't had heat issues for awhile now (since Apple did a logic board revision). Core2Duo gives it more muscle, and the double sided burner is nice too.

Just ordered one for my wife! Its gonna be our first mac so hopefully it impresses her enough to return the Dell XPS M1210 that we have right now. I hope with this new revision Apple took care of the heat problems I've been reading about. I ordered the 15" 2.33 GHz version with 2GB memory and 3 yr warranty plan.

that's good to hear. i was kinda worried...

now i just have to decide.... 2.16Ghz or 2.33Ghz.....
I would get the 2.33 GHz, since it comes with 2GB of RAM, and the 256mb version of the x1600, and of course the slightly faster processor.

ill believe theres no problems when hundreds of people report so

That's silly. You know how thw web works, namely that people only chip in when they have a gripe for the most part.

The fact is that Apple did a logic board revision on the MBP a while ago, and from then on the heat complaints dried up big time. I had an early one (and there is a thread here about the heat in it) and exchanged it for a later one (mentioned in dame thread). The newer one is fast and no heat issues at all.

i dont see how its silly. sure people only post when they have an issue. but i wnat to know about those peoples issues before i step in.

i love my macbook, but man apple had it screwed up for 6months.

i dont see how my conclusion is silly at all.
The reason it is silly is that you have no baseline (like % of the population of new MBP owners) to put the posts against.

By the way, we are talking MBP not Macbook. They are totally different machines. The Pro had a heat problem that Apple addressed with a new logic board a while (at least three months) ago. After they did that we've seen VERY few posts about new hot MBPs. I don't know the heat story on Macbooks, but it could be the same issue.

What about the Macbook line? Any updates in the coming weeks?

i think your more or less one of the few that things like this.

i buy something after its been around a month or so. that way, IM ALREADY aware of what to expect. yes the mbp and mb are two different machines, but that doesnt change my stance. its called smart shopping. i, along with anyone else, dont wanna be a guinnypig. id at least like to know what to expect ya know?
