New HD how can I back it up?

Thread Starter
I had my hd break in my 9300 so I sent in for a new one and am wondering how I can backup all my info on my new hd. I am trying to back it up with the backup utility that is contained in windows. But am having trouble when I get to the option, to choose a place to save your backup and I get this error; saying "The backup file name could not be used." What is happening? I am trying to back it up on a cd.

I will use Norton Ghost. It is very easy and safe.

I have 5 laptops in my household and use Norton Ghost to back up the C: drive (with the OS) onto a separate partition. Then transfer the Ghost Image files to an external hard drive. This has saved me enormous amounts of time and grief when the inevitable happens and you need to reload.

Yup. Norton Ghost and a good external USB hard drive with more capacity than your internal hard drive.

Acronis True Image is also good. There is a 15 day free trial.

Another vote for True Image; IMO, its better than ghost.

i personally use ghost 4 linux as it can backup over the network via FTP as well, and ive never had corupted data off it vs ghost, also you can backup the whole drive including boot loader. Also, g4l is free.

Paragon also do an almost identical product to Acronis True Image...

I replaced the hdd in my M1710, and wanted to clone the drive using a USB enclosure. Acronis would not work at all, and reading several sites suggested that Acronis's attitude is buy it - if it doesn't work, tough!

I wound up using DriveClone. It cloned the main partition fine, (and quickly - 20 minutes!) but now it seems that the MediaDirect partion has an error (Bad PBR Signature). I'm reluctant to try to fix it, since lots of folks seem to have to reinstall winXP after using the MD repair utility.

Never had problems with Acronis since 2001. Backs my 15GB partition (7GB data) in about 2-3 minutes. Restores in slightly over a minute. Amazing app. When you had to reboot just to clone the drive with Ghost back in 2002 (last I tried it; maybe you can do it from within Windows now?), Acronis had that feature available long before then.

Sorry to hear that you experienced problems with it.
