After best part of a month spent trying to order this system (problems with finance companies, bank accounts, my lack of employment etc) I finally managed to get it to Phase 1 and I'm now waiting for the confirmation call from Alienware. Here is what I've ordered:

It looks like I managed to time the order just right because I saved nearly £500 compared to the identical system I tried to order last month. If anyone can see something that I might have missed that would account for the £500 saving then please let me know, I've checked and re-checked the list without finding anything out of place but I still might have missed something.

Anyway, I'll go back to sitting by the phone now... I dont know how I'll cope waiting for it when its at the delivery stage if I'm like this as the confirmation stage!

Congrats on your new m9700!

It would appear that you maxed out your config, I do not see anything missing. Also, I checked last month and the month with the same configs but the price has only dropped marginally since then (also ordering from the UK).

Its finally hit Phase 3, I cant see them meeting their delivery estimate of 6th November though, getting it this month is about all I can hope for it would seem.

On the plus side it probably wont arrive until after the last of my essay deadlines, so at least I wont be distracted by it.

Glad u made it through 1... I am still in 1 but I called my bank today and I too have a bank that needs permission before showing AW the money... So now that I gave both parties permission I hope they can finally start making some progress

I'm now on Phase 10 apparently!

I phoned them up on Tuesday because it was taking so long to move from pre-production, I got told it would be 'definatly maybe going into production soon'. I honestly nearly cancelled my order at that point - but they pulled their finger out and it shipped today, so I dont plan on leaving the house on Monday.

My question is though, if it only takes two days to build, inspect, pack and ship a laptop, why has it taken so long for them to get around to building it? Ah well, I'm sure I wont be complaining when it arrives!

As long as it arrives in perfect condition and keeps working in perfect condition and will satisfy me, I am willing to wait a long, long time.

NIN, I've just found out why both our systems magically got built so quickly - they have just started offering £200 savings AND a free Vista upgrade on the website, but since our orders have shipped we cant benefit from either of these offers... how convinient...

True enough, alot of the decent components are out of stock - I still sent Alienware a scathing email about it, rushing a laptop into production for the sake of saving £400 in offers is not something I'd call proffesional, I doubt anything will come of it but it felt good having a rant.

My laptop was in pre-production for two weeks and I spent £30 on phone calls trying to hurry it up, so I think I'm allowed to be a little bitter when they pull a stunt like that

You'll hopefully forget all that when you have it sitting in front of you ripping the hell out of all those peeps online who are sitting with either a boring beige box or plain looking, slow lappy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah true

Hmm my laptop was in phase 5 still because it needed to be fixed or adjusted. The rep said it would take a couple of days to fix it yet they fixed it well within 24 hrs. I just hope that this means they REALLY fixed the problem. I don't care if they rush stuff out, just as long as they made it perfect before rushing it out.

And oh yeah, I checked my theory about our price vs the new discount price and it checsk out. The price I paid is exactly the same price that is listed on the site now, for the same components, even AFTER the rebate. It just says 'after a 200 euro rebate' now, with a 200 euro's higher initial price. While this is actually common marketing for any company like AW, Dell, Apple etc, it is good news for us since it makes it quite unlikely that they rushed out our notebook, since they simply do not earn themselves 400 pounds with that.

It arrived today, just a few minutes after I got off the phone with a customer services person who was first convinced it hadnt entered production, and then absolutly certain it hadnt left Ireland. If only it had turned up while I was still on the phone, that would have been priceless.

First impressions - its big, really, really big. I've not actually played that many games on it yet, it did struggle with FEAR on max settings though, it would be interesting to see what it gets on 3DMark if/when it finishes downloading. Alienware claim they got 5,634 out of it on 3DMark 06, it will be interesting to see if that is an honest score or something they just made up - in case you guys hadnt guessed i dont trust Alienware too much at the moment

Well I can see your point there, however I am not really sure about it being honest to use the term 'distrust'. No excuse is possible for such misinformation, but they do not try to deceive you. However, I am also victimized by their common misinformation, but they did stay very friendly and helpful throughout. It may not be the rep's fault, they just need a better system to handle their information *especially* a better communication with their delivery partners. That said, I have many experiences with other brands and Alienware's service has been top notch so far. I called them a hundred times for a status update and they always were really informal, friendly, helpful and forthcoming.

Anyways, I can take some distrust away I'm glad to say, and unless you receive a total melon or install all the wrong drivers you *will* get 5500+ in 3DM06. And, if you want to set some records, the m9700 has, at the moment, the highest stock 3dMarks of all notebooks at the moment. That includes the the Dell XPS 1710 with the nearly overheating, overclocked Geforce Go 9750 GTX. You will see ~10K+ in 3DM05 and a whopping ~22K+ in 3DM03.

Seeing as how you got the most bloating config possible, you should be seeing these numbers. I would worry about different things, like receiving it in perfect working order, perfect LCD, perfect MB etc. It will unlikely be the performance that will dissapoint.

And on another note, playing Fear or any modern engined game on highest settings means using max AA and AF, which applies so many multipliers to all the info that needs to be processed that it will bring nearly any system to its knees. Best is to keep these filters just below max, the visual difference is nearly invisible and the performance boost should be over 15FPS avg in FEAR. Night and day difference.
