XPS: Trouble in "paradise".... - Page 8

Shouldn't there be a different number for xps customers.
Okay, I just got off the phone with Patrick Dubois (think I'm spelling it right)...he is apparently the development engineer in charge of design for the XPS, and he stated that this problem seems to be occurring on about 2% of units...I described my problem, and they are going to try and replicate it in the labs and will get back to me in the next couple of days to suggest a fix or send a replacement. Pretty good service, I must say, despite the fact I'd rather be able to use my laptop!

Anyhow, gotta go make dinner for the wife...how'd you make out, Karl?

Just got home from work, going to try the fangui app. 5:30PM call was a no-show (Hey Dell, Strike one!)

Someone mentioned the division was in a meeting... Gee... wonder what they're discussing

I'll chuck an email to Marc in Idaho and inform him of the no-show. I know he's off as of 5PM EST, so I probably won't hear anything until tomorrow.

I think if you guys had a strawpoll of who has the lockup issue the 2% figure seems a just a little optimistic. I would say it's more like 60%.

It's not like you guys came here after the problem occurred. You have all been posting since before you even ordered.

Tried the I8kFangui, cranked the fans to high (man, they DO get loud)....

Problem still exists.

Wow

I'm on the phone with Dell now, he said that "Gerald" is working on it, and he will get back to us, by posting on this board and emailing us, about this issue either tonight or tomorrow. HOWS THAT FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

Gerald tried calling me at my office, I obviously wasn't there. I took a guess at his email address and sent him my additional contact information.

And yeah, it seems like whenever there's a MASS failure in a new product out there, the statistic is ALWAYS a "2%" failure rate

Not this time

I am downloading 3dmark 03 currently and will run some tests on mine. My fingers are crossed, but I bet dell will resolve the issue. New technology is great, but there are often bugs that must be worked out.

Karl,

Quick question - how did the temps on Fangui look when you reproduced the problem? Just curious...

Well guys, all afternoon I have been putting my XPS thru the wringer. 3DMark2003 for 5 continuous loops, Aquamark for 5 more, Ran Quake 3 timedemo 5 or 6 times, UT2003 flyby demo a few times, played Medal Of Honor Allied Assault for about 1/2 hour, and now I am running SiSoft Sandra burn-in wizard for 10 loops..... no crashes, lockups, or corruption.

What is killing me though is that it is still locking up when playing Soldier Of Fortune 2. I earlier reported that the lockup was only occuring in multiplayer but I have since discovered that it will also lockup in singleplayer mode too. The game will play fine for 3 or 4 minutes and then the screen just freezes and the laptop is locked up tighter than a super-glued virgin! And would you believe it, SoF2 is currently my favorite multiplayer FPS. I usually play 2 to 3 hours almost every day .

Here's an idea if anyone wants to try.... what if you loaded Powerstrip and tried changing the VPU and memory settings???

I am going to try Call Of Duty and BF1942 tomorrow and see how that goes. I don't think I've run this many benchmarks and tests on a single computer ever!

Thanks, Karl,

CPU temp doesn't look that hot to me - what's everyone else think?

Too bad Fangui doesn't recognize the GPU. Oh well, what can ya do...

Let's sanity check our core and memory settings with PowerStrip. For those of you with WORKING systems, please post yours if you would!

Here's mine:

In case any is interested, here's what Intel has to say about temperatures:

http://support.intel.com/support/pro.../CS-007999.htm

For a P4 3.4 GHz they give a max of 70 degrees Centigrade. 120 Farenheit is roughly 50 Centigrade, so it's within the maximum at any rate....

Not sure if that means anything, but the info can't hurt.

My core and memory clocks are the same as Karl's...my CPU was around 45C or so when the sh!t hit the fan...

I've been running Prime95 for the past hour or so with no problems, so I'm very confident that this isn't a CPU related issue at least. It looks like it's definitely isolated to the video subsystem.

As the past hour has gone by, the fan has been speeding up in little increments while running Prime 95.

I'm really wondering if there's a difference in vcore and memory speeds in the "working" machines.

Well, that rules out a vcore/mem timing difference.
Why is Karl's being identified as a 9600 and Geed's as a 9700?
Blood everywhere. That's the problem with the bleeding edge.
I hope you guys get this sorted out. Nothing worse than having a system you cannot rely on. I feel your pain.

Also good to see Dell's tech's are on the job.
Maybe they can join in our merry band of posters .
