New Laptop HP DV9008nr

Well I just coughed up $899.00 + tax for a new DV8009nr from Best Buy (on sale). Initially I was going to buy a Gateway MX6448 b ut they wee out of them. Then I found the HP DV9008nr.

I have had the laptop for 5 days now and I have to say I am incredibly happy with the DV900

The only niggly issues I dont like is the inability to get Partition Magic to run so I can split the main partition into two drives. The quick play partition is formatted / confiigured in a special way that will not let it be assigned a drive letter (Partion Magics error message) in Windows.

Things I do like:
Dual core TL-50
17 inch wide screen
1.0 GB RAM
100 GB SATA HD
NVidia Geforce 6150
Windows Media Center

And an extra drive bay to add a second internal HD down the road.

Overall I think I got an incredible deal for the money!!!!!!

Congrats, sounds like a nice machine.

Don't understand both issues though, since Partition Magic "should" run just fine against any Winxp partition. I have not used it in awhile, so maybe there is something new there. (Aha, maybe the SATA drive is causing problems? Confucious says: "Disk that needs extra drivers is not disk to boot from" )

On QuickPlay, no there are two things conspiring to keep you from assigning a drive letter. First - the Partition code is set to D7, which is undefined. Second the MBR code will automagically set it back to D7 everytime you boot from the hard disk (if it finds a partition with "QPLY" in the header )

Thansk for the info Amigadude. You are absolutrly correct about the D7 partion code. That is what the partion info tools shows. I am trying to use Partion Magic 7.0 and I am not positive how well it likes the D7 partion. I was wondering if anyone has had better success with a newer version of Partion Magic?

Keep in mind that the QP partition is at the end of the disk, and is NOT keeping you from splitting the main partition (as you said you wanted to do). If I understand what you want correctly, just repartition the C: drive (if you can) and leave QP alone.

You are correct, I just want to split the c partition. The problem is that partion magic (7.0) will not load to allow me to split the partition; it generates an error (unable assign a drive letter to the quickplay partition) and then promptly exits.

I was hoping some one could provide some insigfht to fix the problem.

FYI...I have been doing my research and found that the harddrive manufacturer, Seagate, has some free disc managment and partitioning tools at:
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/...s/discwiz.html free for download.

I think these are destructive partitioning tools e.g. they will destroy all existing files. So you will have to use these tools with the knowledge that you will be doing a complete wipe and re-install of Windows XP. You will then have to follow the quickplay partion / software installation instructions if you want the full "out of the box" capabilities.

WARNING!!!! Make sure you have made the restoral CD/DVD's first or alreday ordered them from HP and have then on hand as you will also destroy the restoral partiton. Additionally, copy the SWSetup folder to a DVD. This folder has all of your laptops drivers from HP.

I picked up the same unit while on sale at Best Buy. I love the fact that Best Buy is doing instant rebates now on most of their merchandise... boy do I hate mail in rebates.

While I was at it they had $50 off any printer so I picked up an HP3180 all in one, regularly $100, on sale for $80, subtract $50 and final price was $30. Also the salesman said they had a Linksys wireless router for only $10 more (regular $60). Oh yeah... and a free upgrade to Windows Vista (no shipping or handling charges either).

Now... having said that... I wish I would have gotten an faster processor and the sharp widescreen. I have a Dell m710 with the ultrasharp and there is no comparison... but for $900 with $100 off of $140 worth of goodies... I'm extremely pleased!!!

Disk partitioning should be done via a cold boot, not from windows. Create a bootable disc, try running it that way... Either that or use another program.... PM v7 might not be current enough ... I think I used Arconis on both the machines that had SATA drives.. I think I did a little partition resizing... as I like the OS/APPS seperate from the DATA... Google Hiren's BootCD 8.4 PS: Before you waste allot of time messing with the machine you should run some "BURN-IN" / STRESS-TEST" type programs, and give the machine a good workout so you don't do alot of work only to find the unit needs to be returned.... or god forbid sent into HP for "service" (NOTE in this thread there are links to all kinds of stuff / Tech tips that should help you out. Be sure to read the part in the below thread about what you NEED to do before sending your unit in for repair!!!!! http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=86901 PS: Pay attention to what Amigadude says, he's one of the posters here that knows of which he speaks. One last thing... what is BestBuys return window???? (days- restocking fees) . .

all you need to do is install this driver from this site http://www.fs-driver.org/
the parttion is a linux parttion, and give the partion a drive letter then reboot and repartion the drive.
do not change this partions size it is like 1 GB, ( the quick play software is linux)
then after partioning, change it back to none for the drive letter so the quick play will work right

I downloaded the driver; assigned a drive letter, but PM 7.0 still chokes....I will try to get Acronis and give it a whirl.

Thanks for the help!

this is what you need to do to get partion magic to work, first download and install ifs drive from ( http://www.fs-driver.org/ ) THEN REBOOT, then open control panel, and open ifs drives, click the drop down box on (the unknown partion and choose a drive letter for that linux ext2 partion) then you can use partion magic to size the windows partion then after all is don put the unknown pation back to none then reboot !!!
