Vista, M1710 and PR01X or PD01X dock blue screen.

I seem to be having problems with my dock in windows vista. I get a blue screen related to Plug and play when I boot my laptop in the dock. I tried with 2 different monitors (both over dvi) and get the same error. No other periferals are hooked up.

Everything works nicely in windows xp. Did anyone experience this?

thanks

Were you using an external monitor or not? It works fine for me as soon as I don't have an external motnitor hooked up.

That really sucks. I was all happy with the latest vista, using it most of the time when not gaming. Now I get this fancy monitor and I can't use vista anymore... Thanks for your answer Yico.

I'm having a little better experience, but not perfect. I'm running Vista (production release) on an XPS 1710 with D/Dock and an external DVI monitor. I don't get the blue screen, but I do get some erattic behavior from the monitor. It worked flawlessly under XP, but under Vista switching to the external monitor is really flakey. The hot-key Fn-F8 no longer works, but I can get the display to switch to the external and blank the internal if I use the Windows Mobility Center to connect the monitor, then switch to it using the Personalize Display Settings. Once switched, it works fine, but if the laptop suspends or I re-boot, I have to go through the entire process again. I've installed the Dell Notebook System Software (R120775) but it doesn't seem to make a difference. By the way, I installed Vista while the laptop was docked - maybe that made a difference. In any case, I'm still looking for a better solution.

I'm pretty much where you're at now, the blue screen was with RC2. Now, with RTM, it does not bluescreen, but I get the same behavior as you. i.e. external monitor won't work until I use mobility center to trigger the external monitor and blank the internal one.

Let's hope this gets resolved once nvidia or dell releases proper drivers for vista. This is the only thing keeping me from moving on to vista.

I have had a similar problem with the Dell DDock quite a few months after your initial post. One day it might be a simple as XP LOL. I hope this helps. GL!

Install the Dell NVidia Drivers for m1710. They can be downloaded from the Dell website.
At the time of writing this there were no Vista drivers on the NVidia site for the Go 79x0 series cards.

Dock the m1710 in your Dell D-Dock.

Insure your external monitors are connected to the D-Dock.

Open the screen on your m1710 and power up, booting into Windows Vista.

Open the display properties window by Right Mouse clicking the desktop and choosing 'Personalise'.
Then choose 'Display Settings'

Insure your internal LCD monitor is selected as default so you can open the NVidia display panel
At this point I should mention that you can open the 'NVidia Display Panel' by just right mouse
clicking the desktop but initially your display settings may not stick if you open the control
panel in this way. Once you have your DDock working then proceed to use this method.

Click 'Advanced Settings' and you will see the 'GeForce Go 79x0 GTX' TAB. If not cancel the page
and choose your internal LCD monitor as default.

Open the 'GeForce Go 79x0 GTX' TAB and 'Start the Nvidia Control Panel'

Click the 'Display' picture then 'Change the Display Configuration'.
Now you can play with the settings to:
1. Configure for Dual View
2. Select the displays you would like to use
2.2 You should see your external monitors and Internal LCD (Seiko / Epson Digital Display)
2.3 You may need to choose 'My display is not shown on the list' and perform a 'Rigorous Scan'
but only if your monitors are not identified.

You may like to save the 'Profile' by choosing 'Profiles' from the top menu.
I saved it to the desktop and assigned a shortcut key just in case I booted up in the dock
and had no displays.

Proceed to save the settings for each of the windows you have opened up
1. NVidia Display Configuration
2. NVidia Control Panel
3. Windows Display Control panels.
Save your settings as you go, closing the windows as needed. You should arrive back at the desktop
after closing all Display Config type windows.

If you get an error message, right at the end, after saving the last Windows Display Config dialogue box.
It may be because you dont have administrator rights. I just clicked OK and it didn't seem to revert settings.

You may wish to try logging in as Administrator and performing these functions. Remember the Administrator account is
disabled by default in Vista so you might need to search the web on how to enable it. Login as Administrator, hopefully
you don't need to install the NVidia drivers again, do the above again.

Good Luck
Tehx
