I want to upgrade my yonah to a merom in the near future and I'm wondering if this will void my warranty or not, etc, if something happens to my laptop in the next couple years and I need a replacement part under my complete care warranty and they see that I swapped my core duo for a core 2, will my warranty be voided.

Dell will cover anything in the laptop when you bought it and then anything you buy from them (parts for the box, not accessories of course) after you bought it for the full term of your warranty.
Anything you buy after that is covered by whoever you bought it from, if you get a processor or memory from Newegg and they fail you obviously have to deal with either Newegg or the manufacturer of the part.
I'd not recommend buying memory or a processor from Dell after the initial sale. After you buy it they charge WAY too much for anything. Newegg has quick RMA service so just pay attention to the cost of the extended plans and get them if they make sense.

You should be fine! My friend just upgraded to merom and when he was screwing the cpu heatsink back on he threaded the hole and basically the heatsink wouldn't stay on. It still worked etc but only with 3 screws instead of four.
He rang dell told them what he did eg changed cpu threaded hole etc, the next day they (Dell) sent him a new base cover and cpu heatsink and a tech guy to fix it all under warranty.
Now is that service or what.
All my future purchases in any laptop department will be DELL. There service and understanding is outstanding.

Honestly I could not go as far as saying Dell's support is outstanding
And if you do damage your laptop while installing a CPU or GPU or some other hardware you are lible not Dell. But if you have the in home warranty the techs can really care less. As another posted ....your machine and all it's hardware at the time of purchase is what is covered under warranty. So if you do change hardware and somthing goes wrong and you have to send it in to the depot for repairs if you don't have the in home warranty. You will have to send it with it's original configuration. So you may want to hang on to the original parts if you dont have the in home warranty.

Replacing your CPU with a Merom will not void your warranty. Mind you I don't speak in any official capacity, but I do speak as someone who knows a consumer's rights under the Magnusson Moss warranty act. (a federal law that pertains to warranties on ALL consumer products). You can replace any normally replacable part in the product with aftermarket components without forfeiture of the warranty on the rest of the product. However, the manufacturer is not responsible for that aftermarket part failing or if that aftermarket part happens to cause other parts in the product to fail. Obviously something like a CPU really won't cause other hardware in a Laptop to fail. However, should that CPU have a problem Dell is not required to assist you in any way. Also if the motherboard of that system croaks and takes your Core 2 Duo with it, Dell doesn't have to replace it.
It's kind of the same reason the auto manufacturer can't void the warranty on your engine if you install a lift kit on your truck.
