Unlocked GSM phones?

Thread Starter
I switched jobs at the beginning of the month and my new company has me on a 1500 minute a month plan through Cingular so I’ll be using that line as both by business and personal cell phone. The problem is they basically buy us the cheapest phones offered by Cingular.

I went to the Cingular store to see how much a decent phone was going to run me and not surprisingly they charge an arm and a leg without a contract extension. The guy at Cingular pulled me aside and told me I could save at least $100 if I bought an unlocked GSM phone from eBay, or any other place.

So aside from making sure I buy an unlocked quad-band phone, is there anything else I should know before I buy? Is getting it set up as easy as just swapping out my sim card or are there other things I need to do to setup the phone and get it fully functional? Anyone have any recommendations on where to buy from?

Thanks for the help.

ebay is not a bad place to start, thats where i got my unlocked vodafone SE802v from to use with TMobile.

yeah making it work is almost as easy as just swapping sim cards. be aware that some proprietary features (like Tmobile T-zones, whatever Cingular calls their service like this) will not work, also some other features might not work out of the box (like picture messaging, text should be fine though).

Sometimes you'll need to setup message center and internet settings, but it might do it automatically. I've always bought my own unlocked phone.
