Dell MediaDirect 3 - Page 2

it survived because it is un accessable look in your bios your drive is 2 gigs smaller than supposed to be my 100 gig is reported as 98 i cannot find a way to recover those hidden 2 gigs i think if you run m/d repair utility m/d will re-appear i am running 3.1 so ive lost a total of 4 gigs oh well

I don't think it's quite that evil. My 80 GB drive is reported by the BIOS as 80 GB, and I'm pretty certain it said that before I erased it, too. Also, when I first got the notebook I could see the MediaDirect extended partiton in the Windows Disk Manager, just before the ~4.5 GB DellRestore partition at the end of the drive.

My original M1710 had a "100 GB" drive that was actually only 98.5 GB. I know for a fact that there was no BIOS trickery going on there, because I checked it on a non-Dell PC. Since then I have had a complete system swap and the new drive has the full 100 GB. It seems that Hitachi is somewhat "flexible" with its advertised drive capacities.

Why doesn't any one upload it somewhere. All can download it and see if the hard disk is really of what size.
That''s simple isn't it. We can also check out the partition size required ?

it is a 2.5 gig dvd also is copywrited Illegal to upload
you do not make a partition it does you boot to the dvd it partitions your drive thenyou install windows then drivers then quickset then media experience then you install media direct in windows you can order all disks required from dell technical support if your notebook is under warrenty they will not charge you

OK, I read up about the Host Protected Area and I guess that explains why my first 100 GB hard disk appeared to be only 98.5 GB. HPA isn't a Dell-specific thing, it's actually part of the ATA standard, since ATA-4. Dell has either stopped using HPA or only uses it sometimes, because the Inspiron 6400 I just bought didn't have one. MD3 was installed in an extended partition that was perfectly visible in the Windows disk manager.

I would upload the MD3 image, but as jim6172 points out that would be illegal, and also it is huge. Anyway, as I said before I don't really see the point of MD3, it's just a waste of hard disk space.

jim6172, I think you could reclaim the lost space from the HPA using TAFT. Otherwise a disk wipe with the appropriate tool (e.g. DFT for Hitachi drives) might do the trick?
