Aspire 3000 Issues

I've got a fairly new Aspire 3000 laptop... runs really well, except for I keep running in to funky issues.

Firstly, I upgraded to XP Pro. Couldn't get their weird partition in the hdd to remove itself, so windows took over both partitions, leaving me very little room.

After upgrading XP, I initially had no drivers for anything important (network card, touchpad, video, sound, wifi.. etc)! After recovering those, it functioned nicely. Till I tried to watch a DVD movie.. oops, no dvd decoder! I couldn't find a free one online to dl either, and Acer was no response to an email I sent them.

Recently, I can't even play/hear AVI/MPEG movies at all, in any program. It will say they're playing, but the slider bar won't move, and I don't see/hear anything.

Also, randomly, the network connection won't work. Will work fine for any amount of time, and then the LAN lights just suddenly go out... and i'm s.o.l. The tech guys checked it - it's my computer, not the cable, port, or anything else. ANY clue what to do about this? it lasts for whatever amount of time it sees fit to punish me, and then, voila, it works again. example, tonight, it lasted a few hours. A few weeks ago, it was about 10 days.

So, I figured I would completely start over, recovery cds, format everything.. except for, that when I try and use the recovery cds, the bios won't let me set it to boot from the CD drive. CD rom drive will be listed first, but the bios itself doesnt list any devices (vs hdd - under the hdd category, it lists my hard drive.)

Any clue how to deal with any of those issues???

u said that the bios won't let u set the laptop to boot from the CD drive but CDROM drive will be listed first? - "i m so confused"
is there a special key u have to press when performing recovery?

i've followed the directions Acer included for recovery exactly. no luck.

When I have the Bios up, it looks like this:

Cd/DVD rom Drive
+HDD drive

the + expands, showing

CD/DVD drive
+ HDD Drive
- Name/Model of hdd

but there's no + by the cd/dvd. so it doesnt know of any devices, and hence, won't pick up my recovery cd.

and I can't get any kind of video, regardless of the kind of player. I've tried about 6 different ones by now - and tried different codecs - but nothing will play.
