Gaming Computer

First off, I would like to say I have learned so much on these threads over the last couple of years. I have a question about gaming and the answers will probably be subjective.
I just graduated from college and I am giving myself a new computer as a graduation gift. I have been saving for awhile and have a budget of about $5000.00. What laptop should I be looking at for absolute high-end gaming? Currently, I have an older Laptop Dell XPS P4 3.4G w/ 2G of RAM Radeon 9700 Graphics 128k. and I have been really happy with it. It is starting to show its age though, esp. graphically. I'm not oppossed to going with another manufacturer, I just want to get the best out there for gaming.

Another way I was thinking of going was to split the $5000 between a good desktop and a more mobile laptop since all the powerhouse laptops aren't the most mobile anyway. This way I think you can get the same great performance in the desktop just a bit cheaper. I could be wrong though. I worked hard through college and now I would like to get something nice that plays games at the very top of performance!

Like I said, I'm sure I will get a lot of different opinions but thats fine with me. If this isn't in the right forum, could you let me know where I should post this message? Thank you all!

the split idea is much better if youre going to spend that kind of green

if you want to go for just a laptop get the alienware m9700 or get the m-alx. those are truely the fastest laptops on the market at the moment. if you go for the split i would still recommend alienware (a m9700 or m5550 and a area 51 desktop with sli) or dell (i9400 and an xps 700 desktop with sli).

you can build yourself an ultimate desktop and get a decent gaming laptop like m90 or i9400

but wait till g80 releases to build your desktop.

I would just get like a decent laptop (E1505, E1405) and then get a kickass desktop with
Conroe E6600
2 gb ram
500 GB hdd
8800 GTX (releases very soon) or 8800 GT
a good sli 975x mobo
coolermaster stacker case
and a dell 2007 or VX2205 or dell 2407
I suggest building the PC, you'll save alot of money. If you buy it from Alienware, Voodoo, ec.t they'll charge you an extra 2 + k. I'm not bashing a company, its true. It is really easy to build a computer imo. I'm only 12 and i know how to build a computer.

ya building computer much easier and save alot of money. i think you can build a killer system for 3000us for sure.

id say e6600 or e6700 buy from online seller that have good batch chips meaning they will oc to 3.6above
2gb very expensive ram but you save tons buying off people again they must do ddr2800 if you want to oc alot.
8800gt sli if you wish. no benchmarks for gt yet but gtx gets 13k in 3d06 with 3.6 kentfield
raptors raid0 or raid5 if you want alot of speed with lot of raptors lol
galaxy psu should handle 2 gts in sli
the only problem is no good sli mobos yet....
case and all that other stuff you can pick youself
thats shouldnt cost you more than 3000 with everything included.

and with the rest 2000bux you can get a m90 from dell.com/outlet with 2500m which is almost the fastest gpu for laptop

Thanks for all the info everyone. I knew I would get a lot of responses here. I didn't even think about building my own desktop. Is it really that easy to do? I mean, I know my way around a computer and I'm so-so mechanically, but I never thought about building my own system. Any suggestions about building your own computer? Maybe I could pick up a laptop for about $2500 for the time being and then build a desktop.? Ideas?
Anyway, thanks again for all the opinions and advice!

pick up a laptop for $2500 sure you can do that. i would still recommend an alienware m5550 model since its fast, its pretty small, and its quite light. it will also play prettymuch any game on the market at decent framerates with some eye candy. it wont be right at the top of the line in terms of 3d mark numbers but its respectable and is certainly a good choice within its category.

as for building a desktop... well thats always an option. the good side of it is that you will get your desktop exactly how you want it and thats a nice thing. it gives you the most customization options when it comes to every little part going into the system. the downside is also there as well. this downside is in terms of warranty since you will need to keep track of the individual warranty material for each part as well as the difference in warranty periods. also you run the risk that if something doesnt work you could spend a very long time searching for the reason for the problem, you wont really be able to get much help either generally speaking. one of the other major downsides to building it yourself is that it takes time. you can build one really fast of you can build one right. unforutnately they dont really go together. depending on the level of free time you have and the amount you are willing to dedicate to the project it may well be better for you to purchase your machine from a vendor that sells complete systems.

aintz prediction of price is a bit off though. when the 8800 series launches it is going to be huge and demand will be as well. the gtx model will not be cheap, find the most expensive card you can today and add a bit to the price and thats likely what you will pay per 8800gtx. the e6700 is not cheap on its own either running about $500 US for the processor alone.

all in all either build your own or buy one are good choices it just comes down to what you want really....
