finniky dvd rom (MATSHITA UJ-850S)

anyone else have issues with this drive in particular? its been either hit or miss for me... either it's able to read a cd rom, or its not, either it can read a dvd, or it can't.
i tried to update the drivers via device manager, but i wasnt able to locate one... also tried to roll the driver back, but wasnt able to either.
any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my drive (record don't see anything after, read, don't read...). I'm contacting sony to solve the problem... but we're you able to solve your problem? Sony already gave me a link to a drive update but it didn't match my drive so I'm waiting to see what suggestions they have for me. I can't find any update on the internet, I tried to go to Panasonic home page but there was nothing there...

I was having the same propblem with my Matshita DVD -RAM UJ-850S, but now mine has stopped reading any DC or DVD at all. I had Circuit City run a diagnostics to find the driver is non-functioning. The only resolve that I'm aware of is replacing the driver. This entails sending your notebook into ACER, or company who warrenties it. This can be sent from the place that you have purchased your notebook from.

I've even tried to find the driver to purchase it to save my self the trouble of living without it for '10 - 30 business days', not to mention they will do a system restore even if you have already done it yourself.

If you have any additional info it would be great!
